Paul
Pfinzing, Local Nuremberg map, c. 1595
Paul
Pfinzing (1554-1599) was a patrician of Nuremberg who acquired some skills as a
surveyor. In 1592 he produced this map of the region round Lichtenau, near
Nuremberg, whose arms appear on the cartouche.
This is a typical Landtafel, or German map of the countryside.
It shows the woods and the general topography in some detail (see our
enlargement), but does not provide any precise measurements. This distinguishes
it from the estate map, found in England in the 1570s and then in some other
countries, which was a serious tool for absentee landowners to use in
administering the countryside.
