Nicolas
Denisot, Map of Peru, 1545
This
is the only copy known in the United States of the map of Peru produced in 1545
by Nicolas Denisot (1515-1559). He was both a poet and a surveyor,
who helped draw a map of Maine, his native province in France.
Peru was at this time, as the cartouche notes, “the latest country
discovered in the New World,” and ill known to Europeans. Denisot was well
aware of the shortcomings of his map, writing on it that “I thought that while
waiting for something better, it would be better than nothing.”
