Johannes
van Keulen, Map of the East Indies from his Sea atlas of 1681
During
the seventeenth century, the Dutch chartmakers were remarkable for the quantity
and elegance of their production. The atlas by Johannes van Keulen, from which
our map is taken, was characteristic in its technical accuracy and brilliant
presentation.
Our map shows the “East Indies,” still with a trace of portolan
chart-style influence. The detail shows “Hollandia Nova,” including that
stretch of the western coast of Australia on which several vessels of the Dutch
East India Company came to grief.
