Fabio Lucinio, Plan of Rome, 1557

By the middle of the sixteenth century, engraved plans existed for many oif the greater cities of western Europe. This rare engraving shows Rome and was produced about i557, with an exceptionally complete key-table referring to the various sites.  The enlargement, which shows the area near the Castle Sant’Angelo (upper right), shows not only the numbering-system but also the high degree of detail that was achieved.
