Biographical Sketch

Henry Washington Benham was born April 8, 1813, in Connecticut.* His parents were Jared Benham, Jr., and Rebecca Hill. Benham family ancestors were among the first settlers of Boston in 1630, and also one of the first families that settled New Haven, Connecticut. After a year at Yale College in 1832, Henry Benham was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy. He graduated first in his class on June 30, 1837, and was promoted to brevet second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.

From 1837 until the beginning of the Mexican War, he served as assistant engineer for the improvement and repair of fortifications along the Atlantic seaboard. He was serving as an engineer on the staffs of Generals Taylor and Wool when he was wounded at the battle of Buena Vista, February 23, 1847. Benham was brevetted to captain for gallant and meritorious conduct in that action. General Scott recommended a second brevet to major for his services at Buena Vista. From 1848 until 1861 Benham was engaged as superintending engineer for seacoast defense projects from New York to Florida including the construction of a seawall at Boston Harbor and a lighthouse at Buffalo, New York. He was also assistant in charge of the U.S. Survey Office in Washington, D.C., under Professor A. D. Bache. In that connection he traveled to Europe where he served from 1853 to 1856.

In 1855, Benham declined a commission as major in the Ninth Infantry to serve on the frontier with Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan. During the Civil War, 1861 through 1865, Benham distinguished himself in several actions. In 1861, under Brig. Gen. T. A. Morris, he was chief engineer in charge of fortifying the important Union base, Cairo, Illinois. In July 1861, he was in command of the forces which defeated General Garnett at Carrick's Ford, West Virginia, for which he was brevetted colonel. He took part in the campaign, under General Rosecrans, against the Confederates under Gen. Robert E. Lee, and commanded the leading brigade at the battle at Carnifex Ferry, West Virginia, in pursuit of the rebels at Cotton Hill in September 1861.

Benham was in command of the Northern District of the South in 1862, was present at the capture of Fort Pulaski, Georgia, and at the attack on Secessionville, James Island, South Carolina. From 1863 to 1865, Benham was commander of the Engineer Brigade when he superintended the construction of several famous pontoon bridges, including the bridge constructed under fire, across the Rappahannock River for the passage and retreat of Hooker's Army from Chancellorsville, Virginia. He invented the method of laying pontoon bridges by simultaneous bays, thereby accelerating the movement of troops. He also invented a portable intrenching tool called a picket shovel, which was considered of great value to the efficiency of the army.

At the end of the war, Benham was brevetted to brigadier general for gallantry in the campaign leading to Lee's surrender and to major general, U.S. Army, as well as major general, U.S. Army Volunteers, for gallant and faithful service. After he mustered out of the volunteer force, he received a commission as colonel in the Corps of Engineers and returned to duty on Atlantic Coast defenses. He retired from service in June 1882. Benham died in New York City on June 1, 1884, after serving his country for nearly fifty years. A. D. Bache once described General Benham as "a man of excellent judgment, of great kindness, yet firmness in dealing with his subordinates, and discreet in his management of officers and men, and with a faithfulness, energy and industry in the discharge of his duty which cannot be exceeded. His loyalty of character and devotion to the service in which he is engaged cannot be surpassed."

Henry W. Benham married Elizabeth Andrews McNeil, October 3, 1843, in Hillsboro, New Hampshire. Her mother, Elizabeth Andrews Pierce McNeil, was the daughter of Gov. Benjamin Pierce of New Hampshire. Her half-brother, Franklin Pierce, was President of the United States. Elizabeth Andrews Pierce was married to Gen. John McNeil, who distinguished himself at the battles of Chippewa and Niagara during the War of 1812. After retirement from the Army, General McNeil was surveyor of the port of Boston.

The Benhams had four children: Elizabeth Maria, Lilla Marion, Henry Hill, and Henry McNeil, although Henry McNeil died in childhood. Henry Hill Benham attended the military academy at West Point and was a major in the U.S. Army. Lilla Marion Benham married Frederick Dielman, a designer and painter, on January 9, 1883, in New York City. Their children were F. McNeil (known as Neil) and Eugene B.

Benham published his Mexican War memoirs in the magazine, Old and New, in 1871, entitled, "Recollections of Mexico and the Battle of Buena Vista, Mexico, Feb. 22nd and 23rd, 1847." He also published an article about his Civil War experiences, "The West Virginia Campaign of 1861 by an officer of the U.S. Engineers," in 1873, in the same publication. A copy of both articles are in the collection.

*Information in the papers list Benham's birthday on other dates. Most sources state his birth year as 1813, in Connecticut. A document in the papers copied for the New England Historic Genealogical Society states that he was born April 8, 1814, at Quebec, L.C., at the temporary business residence of his father. Another document copied from Appleton's Universal Cyclopaedia states that he was born in Cheshire, Connecticut, in 1816. A biographical sketch by Lt. R. W. Crawford in 1915 states that he was born in June 1813, in Cheshire, Connecticut, and died at the age of seventy-one in 1884.

Scope and Content

Calling Card.jpg (5489 bytes) The Henry W. Benham Family Papers include the papers of Henry W. and Elizabeth A. Benham, their children, and the family papers of John McNeil and Frederick Dielman, relatives and descendants of the Benhams, 1813 to 1954. However, the bulk of the collection, 1847 to 1879, encompasses the military career of Henry W. Benham, especially during the Civil War. The collection consists of four legal size manuscript boxes, four oversize boxes, and thirty-six maps stored in the Cartographic History Library, a total of approximately 3.2 linear feet.

The first series introduces Benham family members through biographical sketches, service records, and genealogical documents compiled from many sources, 1836 to 1930. A biographical sketch of Gen. John McNeil, his son, Lt. John W. S. McNeil, and Gov. Benjamin Pierce are in Series IV. Photographs of family members, a home interior, historical figures and sites help to connect faces and events with documents. Photographs are located in Series I and II as well as Series VI. Most of the photographs are cartes de visite portraits of Henry W. Benham, Union officers, and scenes of pontoon bridges and camps from the Civil War period. There is one carte de visite of a painting of Lieutenant McNeill, and a few Benham family members are represented.

Benham's military papers, Series II, include letters, orders, service records, reports, a journal, maps, newspaper clippings, photographs, literary works, and other documents which describe his activities in the U.S. Army as an officer in the Corps of Engineers and as a commander in battles during the Mexican War and Civil War, 1847 to 1879.

Benham's Mexican War materials, 1847 to 1848, and 1871, consist of letters, general orders, special orders, reports, galley and proof sheets for his article, "Recollections of Mexico and the Battle of Buena Vista, Mexico, Feb. 22nd & 23rd 1847," and an article by another officer, "The Siege of Vera Cruz." Nine maps drawn and/or used by Lieutenant Benham during his tour in Mexico show routes taken by the troops and plans for the battle of Buena Vista. The maps are in Series VII.

General Benham's Civil War journal contains over ninety pages of orders, letters, and dispatches sent and received by him during the battle for Western Virginia. Two fold-out maps are bound in the volume. Twenty additional manuscript and printed maps drawn and/or used by Benham show battlefields, towns, buildings, and the topography of the areas in which troops collided. Some of the maps contain extensive annotations concerning regimental positions and movements. All of the maps are in Series VII.

In Series II, many reports, letters, printed documents, and articles detail Benham's Civil War service. After the battle at James Island in South Carolina in 1862, he was arrested and removed from command temporarily for incurring the disfavor of several generals for moving too hastily against the Southern forces and failing to achieve military objectives. Wrongfully demoted, Benham was reinstated by President Lincoln. A government document prepared in 1864, for Col. Joseph Holt, Judge Advocate of the U.S. Army, relates in detail the results of the investigation of the events at James Island. Also included in his papers are manuals with drawings of the picket shovel he invented and his description for laying and constructing pontoon bridges by "simultaneous bays."

The Benham Family Papers, Series III, include their personal papers, especially Benham's letters to his wife, Elizabeth A. McNeil, and their children, from his tour of duty in England in the 1850s, and from various locations during the Civil War. A series of letters from Henry Hill Benham were written to his wife and mother from tours of duty in Cuba and the Philippines between 1900 and 1906. Other letters document property owned by the family and include the last will and testament of General Benham. There is a small journal, probably written by Mrs. Benham, in which drawings, comments, and extracts of published works were copied. Other items in the family papers include a music book of "Spanish Dances," poetry, an essay on military life versus civilian life, and an address on the value of education presented to a Bible class in Connecticut by Benham. Artifacts in Series VI, include a bone ruler or folder used by Benham and later his son at West Point, a belt, a mirror, and a small wood trunk that once housed the papers.

Series IV, the John McNeil Family Papers, 1813 to 1892, contain biographical sketches of Gen. John McNeil, his son, Lt. John W. S. McNeil, and Gov. Benjamin Pierce. Letters to General McNeil and receipts for property taxes form the bulk of the McNeil Family Papers from 1813 to 1857. Estate papers of General McNeil and Frances McNeil Potter are in this series.

Series V, the Frederick Dielman Family Papers, 1882 to 1945, consist primarily of correspondence and printed material collected by Frederick Dielman and his son, Neil. Frederick Dielman was a designer, illustrator, and painter. He was the art director of Cooper Union in New York City from 1905 to 1932.

General Benham's papers contain letters and documents from many historical figures, such as John C. Fremont, Jefferson Davis, George B. McClellan, and Edwin M. Stanton. A contemporary facsimile of a letter written and signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1864, concerns Benham's assignment of duty. He was a national figure whose activities spanned the expansion of the American frontier and made engineering and military history during the nineteenth century. The Henry W. Benham Family Papers are of value to students of military and engineering history, cartography, the Mexican War, the Civil War, and family history of the nineteenth century.

Provenance Statement

Acquisition of the Henry W. Benham Family Papers was made possible in the summer of 1995, by a grant from the Summerlee Foundation of Dallas and matching funds from the PUF special collections enhancement fund established by the University of Texas System Board of Regents. They were purchased from Al Peters and Conrad Bennett, Fort Worth book and manuscript dealers, who also donated a portion of the collection.

Approximately two hundred additional Benham family items were acquired by the university in November 1995. Dr. and Mrs. Marvin Applewhite of Dallas and the University of Texas System Board of Regents contributed matching funds to purchase the remaining materials from Wes O. Clark of Dallas, a gun, book, and manuscript collector.

Restrictions

Many documents in this collection are quite fragile. Therefore, several items are restricted from being photocopied. This is usually due to tight bindings, brittle paper, or size.

Permission to publish material from the Henry W. Benham Family Papers must be obtained in writing from the Special Collections Division.

Note to the Researcher

The papers from both acquisitions were combined and processed as one collection. The materials were received in no discernible order, therefore the processing archivist determined the arrangement.

Most of the materials in the collection had been stored folded for many years. They were humidified, flattened, and many items were encapsulated or placed in mylar folders during processing. In Spring 1996, the maps and journal in the Benham Papers were sent to the Conservation Division of ICI, located in Brown Summit, North Carolina, for repair and preservation treatment. The journal was mended, the binding resewn, and a clamshell box was constructed for its storage. The maps were flattened, deacidified, repaired, and encapsulated for permanent storage.

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, has three boxes of Henry Washington Benham Papers, 1863-1879, that were unprocessed as of March 1997.

An oil portrait on canvas, "Brevet Major General Henry W. Benham," hangs in Cullum Hall, Office of the Cadet Hostess, at the U.S. Military Academy. It was painted by his son-in-law, Frederick I. Dielman.
