Cartographic Connections: Natural Encounters VideoThe video called "Natural Encounters" shows you how historical maps can be used to answer questions about Texas’s natural habitats, and how they have changed over time. The video begins with an overview of Texas’s diverse natural habitats, shows you how early naturalists studied the vegetation and other aspects of Texas’s environment, and then shows you how old maps can be “rubber sheeted” -- that is, placed on the computer and shaped to fit into the same locations on modern maps – in order to understand how things have changed from, say, 1850 to 2006. The video also shows you how a city in Texas uses historical maps to help it create a community that is sensitive to the environment. The “Natural Encounters” video is about 23 minutes long, and can serve as a history and geography lesson for students of all ages. Streaming Videos
