PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
- 1997-c. Associate Director for Special Collections, Branch Libraries, and Programs, The
University of Texas at Arlington Libraries. Duties consist of directing and supervising
the operations and administration of the Special Collections Division, the Architecture
and Fine Arts Library, and the Science and Engineering Library. Also serve as coordinator
of the University Libraries' development and publications program.
- 1986-1997 Assistant Director for Special Collections and Development, The University of
Texas at Arlington Libraries. Duties consist of directing and supervising the operations
and administration of the Special Collections Division, including the identification,
acquisition, processing, and preservation of materials; reference and user services;
outreach, fund raising, and public relations; and serving as liaison with the Friends of
the UTA Libraries, a library support organization with 350 members. Special Collections
houses 40,000 volumes, 7,500 rare maps, 7,000 linear feet of manuscript and archival
collections, and approximately 800,000 photographic prints and negatives. The division's
holdings focus on Texas, Mexico, the American Southwest, the U.S. War with Mexico, and the
cartographic history of the Gulf of Mexico. The division has a full-time staff of ten,
evenly divided between professional and classified staff, and employs eight work-study
students each semester. In addition, the permanent and student staff are assisted by
volunteers and student interns pursuing graduate education in archival science.
- 1987-c. Adjunct Associate Professor of History, Department of History, The University of
Texas at Arlington. Duties consist of teaching the following classes: History 5342,
Principles of Archives and Museums I; History 5343, Principles of Archives and Museums II;
History 5644, Internship in Archival Enterprise; History 5348, Oral History Methods and
Methodology; History 3363, Texas and Spanish Borderlands; and Geography/History 4310,
Geography and History of the Southwest. As a member of the graduate faculty, I also serve
on and direct M.A. and Ph.D. student theses and dissertation committees.
- 1980-1986 Oral Historian, Texas/Dallas History and Archives 1986 Division, Dallas Public
Library, Dallas, Texas. Duties consisted of directing the library's oral history program;
serving on the division's interviewing, budget, and acquisitions committees, as well as on
systemwide committees; planning and implementing workshops and programs; curating
exhibits; planning and coordinating publications based on the division's collections;
conducting community outreach presentations; working closely with donors; and servicing
the division's reference desk.

consisted of inventorying county records in Texas courthouses, preparing finding aids for
these records, and educating county officials about the state's historical records
depository program.
