PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
- 1997- Center for Distance Education, University of Texas at
Arlington, 1997Present, Director. Established Center for Distance Education with
intranet/Internet focus. Authored start-up budget and obtained funding for cutting-edge
desktop training courseware development facility (total spending in 1997-98 academic year:
$1 million). Oversaw development and delivery of video-rich desktop-training-style
classes. Promoted asynchronous learning network approach for credit and non-credit
instruction. Administered technical facets of creating and maintaining production and
delivery libraries of digital educational media in 10-15 Tbyte range. Established and
maintained successful work environment for a team of highly-creative digital media
specialists (7 full-time personnel). Created partnerships with major supercomputer firm
and local school districts. Coordinated with campus offices required to develop a modern
digital media facility, including Offices of Academic Computing, Accounting, Budgets and
Planning, Development, Grants and Contracts, Human Resources, Information Technology,
Physical Plant, Purchasing, Vouchering, Security, and University Video. Participated in
University-wide task forces on Strategic Enrollment, Developmental Education, and
Corporate Education. Served as campus coordinator for U.T.Systems TeleCampus
initiative, obtaining significant System grant support for on-line class development.
Taught Russian language and Russian for Research and the Professions (non-credit
course delivered via email).
- 1992-1997 Language Acquisition Center, University of Texas at
Arlington, Director. Management of mid-sized language media center with
curriculum-wide media integration philosophy. Responsibility for fiscal management and
development of facility with 100,000 users/year, 11 part-time personnel. Developed and
implemented comprehensive program to integrate media materials into language curriculum,
significantly increasing educational use of facility. Created personnel team with emphasis
on service-oriented, user-friendly media facility. Expanded equipment holdings, including
computer network and audio/video equipment, on a fixed budget. Instituted an ongoing
in-house development program, heading instructional design team to work with teachers in
the production and collection of audio, video, and software materials, including more than
400 software products utilizing digitized computer-based audio and video. Used local cable
access channel for distribution of instructional materials. Regular coordination with
campus offices required to run a modern media facility, including Offices of Academic
Computing, Budgets and Payroll, Business, Development, Human Resources, Media Services,
Physical Plant, Purchasing and Vouchering, and Security. Provided community outreach in
the form of lectures, workshops, and demonstrations to publicize Center work to the
community and to academia. Established World-Wide Web network site for language
instruction and dissemination of computer materials and audio-on-demand. Taught graduate
seminars in language learning and media, as well as Web authoring. Taught undergraduate
courses in first-, second-, third-, and fourth-year Russian, as well as first-year German.
