- Primary Sources versus Secondary Sources. Students sometimes have difficulty understanding the difference between primary sources or primary research resources versus secondary sources or secondary research resources. This is a difficult distinction because the definition changes somewhat depending on the academic field. The PDF guide created by the Earlham College Library called, "Using Scientific Literature in Biology Courses" offers in the first four pages a clear and concise explanation between the two types of research literature in the field of biology. A different guide, offered by the University of Maryland Libraries, presents a description of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary research sources through the eyes of an historian. It appears that a research based peer-reviewed article published in a top-notch biology journal would be a "primary source" while a research based peer-reviewed article published in a top-notch history journal would be a "secondary source." This guide from James Cook University Library's Ward Saylor and Helen Hooper helps to clarify the apparent contradiction between the Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Sources.
Also see the related, but quite different, concept "Peer Reviewed Journals" as explained by a University of Texas at Austin Libraries' guide and also as explained by UT Arlington Library Helen Hough's "Peer Reviewed Academic Journals" guide.
