Social Work Practice with Ethnically and Racially Diverse Nursing Home Residents and their Families cover image Edited by Patricia J. Kolb.
New York, NY: Columbia University Press, ©2007.
"The first of its kind, this volume is a critical companion for service providers who work with African American, American Indian, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mexican American, and Puerto Rican elders and their families in nursing homes and other settings addressing placement issues. These groups are likely to use nursing homes in larger numbers as cultural shifts, such as higher divorce rates and increased outside-of-home employment for females, transform traditional family dynamics." Ageism: Stereotyping and Prejudice Against Older Persons.
Edited by Todd D. Nelson.
Ageism: Stereotyping and Prejudice Against Older Persons cover image Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, ©2002.
"Along with race and gender, people commonly use age to categorize -- and form stereotypes about -- others. Of the three categories, age is the only one in which the members of the in-group (the young) will eventually join the out-group (the old). Although ageism is found cross-culturally, it is especially prevalent in the United States, where most people regard growing older with depression, fear, and anxiety. Older people in the United States are stigmatized and marginalized, with often devastating consequences. Although researchers have paid a great deal of attention to racism and sexism, there has been a dearth of research on ageism. A major reason for this neglect is that age prejudice is still considered socially acceptable." (quote from publisher's webpage).

Geronticide: Killing the Elderly.
Geronticide: Killing the Elderly cover image By Mike Brogden.
London, England; Philadelphia, PA: Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2001.
"The increasing elderly population poses many economic and ethical questions for modern society. One of the most topical and controversial of these is the debate about euthanasia. Drawing on a variety of historical, contemporary, anthropological and literary sources, this book considers the present day debates about the sanctity of elderly lives and the question of euthanasia. The book shows that killing the elderly, voluntarily or involuntarily, has been a feature of many societies, from the primitive to the present day." (quote from publisher's webpage).

Living through Loss: Interventions Across the Life Span.
By Nancy R. Hooyman and Betty J. Kramer.
Living through Loss: Interventions Across the Life Span cover image New York, NY: Columbia University Press, ©2006.
Series: Foundations of social work knowledge.
"Nancy R. Hooyman and Betty J. Kramer's Living Through Loss is the first book to identify the many ways in which people experience loss over the course of life and to discuss the interventions most effective at each stage of life. It is intended for students, social workers, and other health and human service professionals who seek a definitive, single-source reference. The authors' starting point is that loss comes in many forms and can include not only suffering the death of a person one loves but also giving birth to a child with disabilities, living with chronic illness, or being abused, assaulted, or otherwise traumatized. They approach loss from the perspective of the resilience model, which acknowledges the capacity of people to integrate loss into their lives, and write sensitively about the role of age, race, culture, sexual orientation, gender, and spirituality in a person's response to loss." The Older Worker Advantage: Making the Most of Our Aging Workforce.
The Older Worker Advantage: Making the Most of Our Aging Workforce cover image By Gordon F. Shea and Adolf Haasen.
Westport, CN: Praeger, ©2006.
"Recently published figures predict that the number of employed individuals between the ages of 55 and 64 will increase by 11 million by 2002; on average, today's 65-year-old can expect to live to 83, reflecting general trends in increased health and longevity. As the huge cadre of baby boomers approaches traditional retirement age, such factors as financial security, health benefits, and the attractiveness of staying active in later years are encouraging more older people to work well into their 60s, 70s, and even 80s, while businesses are learning to anticipate their long-term employment needs, and facing potential labor shortages unless they hold onto and develop more older workers. The economic, political, and cultural implications of these trends will reach staggering proportions, changing the make-up of organizations large and small and the very nature of work and our attitudes toward it." "This book will prove to be an invaluable resource for policy advocates, program planners, and service delivery agents. It provides an overview of the major pieces of legislation that currently impact the field of aging, and the lives of older adults; addresses the philosophical, historical, and demographic challenges that they face; and lays out tools that facilitate policy and program development to include the media, coalition building, the use of an evidence base, and health promotion strategies. Policy-Based Profession: An Introduction to Social Welfare Policy Analysis for Social Workers cover image By Philip R. Popple and Leslie Leighninger.
Boston, MA: Pearson/Allyn and Bacon, ©2008.
"The Fourth Edition of The Policy-Based Profession provides students with a process for analyzing policies that will help them as they enter a career in social work. It offers a detailed foundation for policy analysis, including chapters on historical policy analysis, social/economic analysis, and political analysis. This text brings students up to date on the latest developments in welfare reform, mental health managed care, the campaign to restructure Social Security, reactions to current immigration issues, current threats to workers' pensions, program and policy responses to the problems of substance abuse, and the use of family preservation as an approach to child protection." Chapter 8 looks at issues related to aging, specifically the "The Social Security Act of 1935." Quite useful indeed, this book provides a "Contemporary Analysis of Social Security" in the United States. (quotes from publisher's webpage).

Social Structures, Aging, and Self-Regulation in the Elderly.
Social Structures, Aging, and Self-Regulation in the Elderly cover image Edited by K. Warner Schaie and Laura L. Carstensen.
New York, NY: Springer Pub., ©2006.
Series: Societal impact on aging.
"This collection considers ways in which societal contexts influence aging by influencing self-regulatory processes. No one doubts that the social contexts in which individuals develop exert strong influence on life trajectories. Those born into environments that provide high quality education, supportive social relations, and economic assets do better in old age than those born into environments bereft of such resources. The extent of this influence, however, is only beginning to be revealed. Recent research shows that life experiences influence basic brain structures (e.g. the effect of musical training on neural organization) and functions (e.g. inflammatory processes), and that social embeddedness may even protect against Alzheimer's disease. Similarly, education increasingly appears to have a "real" effect on neural integrity. Thus, societal contexts may not simply open or close doors for individuals, but may influence self-regulatory processes at the most basic levels of functioning." (quote from publisher's webpage).

These groups are likely to use nursing homes in larger numbers as cultural shifts, such as higher divorce rates and increased outside-of-home employment for females, transform traditional family dynamics." Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, A Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson.
Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, A Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson cover image By Mitch Albom.
New York, NY: Doubleday, ©1997.
"Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger? Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final "class": lessons in how to live." Boston, MA: PBS Video, 2006.
1 DVD Videodisc, 60 minutes.
"The baby boomer generation is headed for a shock as it hits retirement: boomers will be long on life expectancy but short on income. In addition to Social Security, the pillars of retirement income for Americans have been either lifetime corporate pensions or employee-contribution plans such as 401Ks. But both retirement strategies are in trouble. Buffeted by pension cuts, corporate bankruptcies, and the 2001-2002 stock market crash, most boomers now expect to be working into their retirement years."--Container.

Elder Abuse: Detection, Management, and Prevention.
Secaucus, NJ: Network for Continuing Medical Education, ©2005.
1 DVD Videodisc, 60 minutes.
Elder abuse is one of the fastest-growing forms of domestic violence in the United States. Each year, an estimated 1 to 2 million elderly Americans are victims of physical, emotional, financial, or other abuse. Americans over the age of 80 years are 2 to 3 times more likely to suffer abuse than are younger adults; yet most cases of elder abuse go undetected. In this video program, Dr. Barbara Paris, an international expert on elder abuse and a long-time advocate for the rights of elders, explains how to recognize elderly patients who are at risk for or who are victims of mistreatment, and presents steps that can be taken to protect and monitor elderly patients who are victims of abuse or neglect.

Alexandria, VA: PBS Home Video, ©2006.
60 minutes; 1 DVD videodisc.
"For the first time in American history, "the old old"--Those over 85 -- are now the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. Medical advances have enabled an unprecedented number of Americans to live longer, healthier lives. But for millions of elderly, living longer can also mean a debilitating physical decline that often requires an immense amount of care. And just as more care is needed, fewer caregivers are available to provide it. In "Living Old," FRONTLINE investigates this national crisis and explores the new realities of aging in America."--Publisher's information.

Boomers Approaching Midlife: How Secure a Future? Research Report.
"Baby boomers now constitute the core of the prime working age population, helping to fuel the longest peacetime economic expansion in our history. When they begin to retire in large numbers in 2008 (when the oldest boomers turn 62), they will create pressures on private and public retirement systems as they begin to withdraw from the labor force, and they may in the process redefine retirement. This 62 page chartbook represents an assessment of the future economic prospects of boomers. The book's conclusions are that most boomers will generally be better off in retirement than most people think, but there will still be a substantial vulnerable segment of the boomer population that will retire with no private pension, little or no retirement savings, and with the prospect of increased longevity with meager resources."
