- Abused Men: The Hidden Side of Domestic Violence, 2nd edition.
-
By Philip W. Cook.
Westport, CN: Praeger, 2009.
"Say the words "domestic violence," and images of battered women come to mind. Yet, the more accurate picture is different, and it crosses genders. Women strike the first blow in about half of the domestic disputes nationwide, and a National Violence Against Women Survey, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and U.S. Justice Department, found that nearly 40 percent of all domestic violence victims are men.
The first edition of Philip W. Cook's book, Abused Men: The Hidden Side of Domestic Violence (Praeger, 1997), drew attention and praise nationwide from individuals and from media, ranging from CNN and Fox network's The O'Reilly Factor to scholarly publications such as The Journal of Marriage and Family. On the 10th anniversary of that groundbreaking book, Cook began revising and expanding his work. The result is this second edition--a disturbing look at a trend that continues to increase.
The new edition of Abused Men: The Hidden Side of Domestic Violence offers up-to-date data on the prevalence of intimate partner violence against men, incorporating personal interviews and cases drawn from the media. It also includes updates on law, legislation, court activity, social responses, police activity, support groups, batterer programs, and crisis intervention programs. The final chapter contains a detailed and specific description of needed reforms in the current approach to intimate partner violence, whether the victims are male or female." - (publisher's

- At Home in the Law: How the Domestic Violence Revolution is Transforming Privacy.
-
By Jeannie Suk.
New Haven, CN: Yale University Press, ©2009.
"In the past forty years, the idea of home, which is central to how the law conceives of crime, punishment, and privacy, has changed radically. Legal scholar Jeannie Suk shows how the legitimate goal of legal feminists to protect women from domestic abuse has led to a new and unexpected set of legal practices.
Suk examines case studies of major legal developments in contemporary American law pertaining to domestic violence, self-defense, privacy, sexual autonomy, and property in order to illuminate the changing relation between home and the law. She argues that the growing legal vision that has led to the breakdown of traditional boundaries between public and private space is resulting in a substantial reduction of autonomy and privacy for both women and men." - (publisher's

- Backs against the Wall: Battered Women's Resistance Strategies.
-
Edited by Kathy A. McCloskey and Marilyn H. Sitaker.
Abingdon, Oxon, England; New York, NY: Routledge, 2009.
"Backs Against the Wall: Battered Women's Resistance Strategies tackles several controversial aspects involved with intimate partner violence (IPV)--namely the approaches many victims use when resisting their oppressors. This sensitive and sensible feminist perspective concerning battered women's use of different resistance strategies, and the reasons why they use them, also focuses on ways to support victims through intervention and prevention strategies. Leading experts provide current research, revealing viewpoints, and convincing assertions about the victims of IPV.
Backs Against the Wall: Battered Women's Resistance Strategies powerfully refutes the sweeping assertions made by today's antifeminist-based mindset that women are as violent as men in cases of IPV perpetration. This insightful source provides strong evidence of the different resistance strategies that battered women use in response to multiple oppressions, including IPV, in the case against the gender parity argument--that may very well be politically motivated. The text provides extensive references and several figures and tables to clearly present data." - (publisher's

- The Battered Woman Syndrome, 3rd edition.
-
By Lenore E.A. Walker.
New York, NY: Springer, ©2009.
"Walker's seminal, groundbreaking book The Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS) has forged new directions in the field of domestic violence for over 30 years. Now, the highly anticipated, third edition offers thoroughly updated and revised research on key topics, including posttraumatic stress disorder, learned helplessness or learned optimism, the cycle theory of violence, and much more.
This third edition presents updated data generated from the newly modified Battered Woman Syndrome Questionnaire (BWSQ). With a new focus on culture and ethnicity, this data details the experiences of foreign women who either live in their country of origin or the U.S. Like its popular predecessors, this new edition serves as a valuable resource for both professional counselors and students studying domestic violence." - (publisher's

"Batterer intervention programs are an integral part of any comprehensive approach to domestic violence. However, because intervention programs are relatively new, there is a need for increased communication between programming providers and criminal justice professionals. The latest publication in NIJ's "Issues and Practices" series, "Batterer Intervention: Program Approaches and Criminal Justice Strategies" provides judges, prosecutors, and probation officers with the information they need to better understand batterer intervention and make appropriate decisions regarding programming." - (publisher's

- Death by Domestic Violence: Preventing the Murders and Murder-Suicides.
-
By Katherine van Wormer and Albert R. Roberts.
Westport, CN: Praeger, 2009.
Series: Social and Pychological Issues.
"Each year, about 33 percent of all women and 3 percent of all men murdered in the United States, are killed by a so-called intimate, a spouse, partner, or lover. Nationwide, murder by an intimate is the number one cause of death for pregnant women. And murder by an intimate is not just an American problem. A European task force recently found domestic violence accounts for 25 percent of all homicides in London, and 35 percent across England and Wales. In this timely book, van Wormer and Roberts describe the problem, and what they have seen and heard on the front lines with both women and men who have escaped domestic violence that was escalating toward deadly levels. The text examines not only the psychology of the batterer but of domestic murder, and domestic murder-suicide. Drawn from the experience and insights of these two widely-known social workers, the text includes a safety plan for those at risk and a chapter providing narratives of women in prison for killing their abusive husband or partner. Drawing on the experience and insights of these two widely-known social workers, Death by Domestic Violence separates domestic violence myths and facts, explains the traumatic bonding that occurs between batterer and victim, and details how one facet of the solution could be school-based interventions and education. The book culminates with recommendations for further reduction of harm and a safety plan for those at risk." - (publisher's

- Domestic Violence and Children: A Handbook for Schools and Early Years Settings.
-
By Abigail Sterne and Liz Poole; with Donna Chadwick, Catherine Lawler, and Lynda W Dodd.
London, UK; New York, NY: Routledge, 2010.
"What can schools and social care workers do to help children affected by domestic violence?
Large numbers of children are affected by domestic violence. The problem crosses every social class and culture. It causes distress and anxiety in children and adversely affects their learning and play, as well as their behaviour, wellbeing and attendance.
Education staff may know of a child or family in crisis, want to help, yet feel outside their comfort zone, grappling with a complex issue not covered in their training. This book describes the impact of domestic violence on children and provides support for education and social care professionals. It takes heavy workloads into account and suggests practical ways of meeting the needs of pupils who come from difficult home backgrounds

- Domestic Violence and Psychology: A Critical Perspective.
-
By Paula Nicolson.
London, UK; New York, NY: Routledge, 2010.
Series: Women and Psychology.
"This book rethinks the way psychological knowledge of domestic violence has typically been constructed. It puts forward a psychological perspective which is both critical of the traditional 'woman blaming' stance, as well as being at odds with the feminist position that men are wholly to blame for domestic abuse and that violence in intimate relationships is caused by gender-power relations. It is rather argued that to neglect the emotions, experiences and psychological explanations for domestic violence is to fail those who suffer and thwart attempts to prevent future abuse.
Drawing on the work of scholars including Giddens, Foucault, Klein and Winnicott, and using interview and survey data to illustrate its arguments, Domestic Violence and Psychology develops a theoretical framework for examining the context, intentions and experiences in the lives of women in abusive relationships, the men who abuse and the children who suffer in the abusive family. As such this book will be of great interest to those studying social and clinical psychology, social work, cultural studies, sociology and women's studies." - (publisher's

- Domestic Violence and the Law: Theory and Practice, 2nd edition.
-
By Elizabeth M. Schneider, Cheryl Hanna, Judith G.Greenberg, and Clare Dalton.
New York, NY: Foundation Press, ©2008.
Series: University Casebook Series.
"Elizabeth M. Schneider (Brooklyn Law School) and Clare Dalton (Northeastern University School of Law) are joined by two new authors, Judith G. Greenberg (New England School of Law) and Cheryl Hanna (Vermont Law School) in this exciting new Second Edition. The casebook maintains its rich focus on examining domestic violence through a variety of theoretical, practical, and interdisciplinary lenses and remains the most comprehensive casebook on domestic violence. This book is widely used in law school courses and clinics on domestic violence, heavily adopted in undergraduate and graduate courses, and routinely relied upon by judges, attorneys, and other professionals who work in the field. The Second Edition captures the tremendous growth in domestic violence law and includes the many recent Supreme Court cases implicating domestic violence, including Crawford v. Washington, Davis v. Washington, Dixon v. United States, Georgia v. Randolph, Ayotte v. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, and Castle Rock v. Gonzales. The new edition emphasizes the current expansion of case law and contains updated notes with practical problems. It adds three new chapters: sexual autonomy, reproductive rights and domestic violence; evidence in domestic violence cases and immigration, asylum and domestic violence. It streamlines the family law materials, highlights the most pressing issues in criminal law, and broadens the already significant integration of issues of diversity throughout the book including more materials on the impact of domestic violence on Native Americans, Muslims, teens, and the elderly." - (publisher's

- Domestic Violence in Rural Australia.
-
By Sarah Wendt.
Annandale, NSW: Federation Press, 2009.
"This book paints a picture about domestic violence in rural Australia, drawing on research that has been conducted over the last 2 decades as well as the author's research in rural communities in South Australia. It provides an analysis of how rural communities have been understood historically and examines social/cultural constructions of 'rural culture' overtime. Wendt draws heavily on women's and human service workers' stories about their experiences of domestic violence in rural contexts to argue the importance of recognising local culture when forming community responses to domestic violence. The stories show women's creativity, agency, heartache, and survival when experiencing, coping with, and responding to domestic violence, and show why it is important to provide a complex analysis of the relations between gender, power, and 'rural culture'. The book is written for those involved in social care practice in rural communities, policy development, and tertiary students." - (publisher's

- Domestic Violence Treatment for Abusive Women: A Treatment Manual.
-
By Ellen L. Bowen.
New York, NY: Routledge, ©2009.
"Most therapists have experience with wives, girlfriends, and children of violent men, never suspecting that domestic violence offenders can be women too. In Domestic Violence Treatment for Abusive Women, Bowen challenges us to re-think our gender and violence constructs and guides clinicians through the emerging field of treatment of female abusers.
Unlike other books designed for male clients that may be adapted to women, this book is specifically written for use with women, with handouts and exercises created from the author's own clinical experience. It is deliberately designed to give clinicians knowledge to deal with all aspects of female domestic violence, from dealing with their first client to filling out paperwork correctly. The first part of the book is dedicated to defining female violence and helping readers overcome pre-existing gender stereotypes. The second part provides a framework for everything a therapist needs in order to set up and facilitate a domestic violence treatment program for women. As a whole, Domestic Violence Treatment for Abusive Women helps the licensed mental health professional understand women's domestic violence and offers step-by-step direction for successful therapy." - (publisher's

- Enhancing Resilience in Survivors of Family Violence.
-
By Kim M. Anderson.
New York, NY: Springer, ©2010.
"In this book, Kim Anderson demonstrates the extent to which individuals with histories of family violence can have "self-correcting" tendencies that promote their positive adaptation in overcoming trauma. These strengths, which often go unrecognized or underappreciated, can be used for healing. This book assists mental health practitioners in identifying, supporting, and validating the resilient capacities of their clients.
Anderson provides new conceptual frameworks and clinical strategies for integrating resilience-oriented and strengths-based treatment with survivors of family violence. The book discusses resilience in survivors of childhood incest, children of battered women, and individuals formerly in violent domestic relationships." - (publisher's

- Expert Testimony on Domestic Violence: A Discourse Analysis.
-
By Melissa Hamilton.
El Paso, TX: LFB Scholarly Pub., 2009.
Series: Law and Society.
"Hamilton examines the impact of social science evidence on legal reasoning in domestic violence cases. Relying on interdisciplinary theories and methodologies in law, she analyzes the text and rhetoric from a body of appellate opinions in which expert witnesses provided social science-based testimony about domestic violence. Expert testimony was highly influential on, yet was rarely challenged by, the appellate judges. From this body of judicial writings, Hamilton uncovers typologies of battered women, battering men, and abusive relationships. She also notes the discursive tension in the judicial opinions in the cases in which the common typologies did not apply well to the specific defendants, victims, or their circumstances based on the factual evidence in the underlying trials.
Melissa Hamilton received a J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law and a Ph.D from the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Sociology. She is a former police officer, corrections officer, and appellate court clerk. Hamilton currently is a faculty member at the University of Toledo College of Law." - (publisher's

- Familicidal Hearts: The Emotional Styles of 211 Killers.
-
By Neil Websdale.
Oxford. UK; New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 2010.
Series: Interpersonal Violence.
"In Familicidal Hearts, award-winning author and sociologist Neil Websdale uncovers the stories behind 196 male and 15 female perpetrators of this shocking offense, situating their emotional styles on a continuum, from the livid coercive to the civil reputable. With highly detailed and riveting case studies, Websdale explores the pivotal roles of shame, rage, fear, anxiety, and depression in the lives and crimes of the killers. His analysis demonstrates how internal emotional conflict, against a backdrop of societal pressures, is at the root of familicide, challenging the widely accepted argument that murderers kill family members to assert power and control. Websdale contends instead that most perpetrators struggle with intense shame, many sensing that they failed to live up to the demands of modern gender prescriptions, as fathers and lovers, wives and mothers. What emerges is a compelling theory about the haunting effects of modern emotional struggles on perpetrators, controlling and upstanding alike.
Captivatingly written and expertly researched, this provocative book weaves a gripping tale of modern-era "haunted hearts." Blending the social, the historical, and the emotional into a new way of making sense of a horrific crime, Familicidal Hearts is a provocative meditation on gender roles, social forces, and modern life itself." - (publisher's

- Family Violence: Communication Processes.
-
Edited by Dudley D. Cahn.
Albany, NY: State University of New York Press, ©2009.
Series: SUNY Series in Communication Studies.
"Although the United States has a high level of affluence and education compared to much of the rest of the world, neither wealth nor schooling ensures personal safety, particularly within the family and home. Every ten seconds, a child is beaten, neglected, or molested by his or her own family members, and many couples and children can be violent, abusive, and aggressive towards other family members as well. Family Violence focuses on the communication processes that occur before, during, and after these episodes. Contributors to the volume include both established scholars and newcomers to the communication field who use quantitative and qualitative approaches to unravel the complexities of the communication processes that are at the center of violence in families. Essays cover a range of topics, from couples violence to violence between parents and children, and shed new light on the significant problem of domestic violence in the United States." - (publisher's

- Hard Knocks: Domestic Violence and the Psychology of Storytelling.
-
By Janice Haaken.
London, UK; New York, NY: Routledge, 2010.
Series: Women and Psychology.
"This book draws on interviews carried out over a period of eight years, as well as novels, films, and domestic violence literature, to explain the role of storytelling in the history of the battered women's movement. The author shows how cultural contexts shape how stories about domestic abuse get told, and offers critical tools for bringing psychology into discussions of group dynamics in the domestic violence field.
The book enlists psychoanalytic-feminist theory to analyse storytelling practices and to re-visit four areas of tension in the movement where signs of battle fatigue have been most acute. These areas include the conflicts that emerge between the battered women's movement and the state, the complex relationship between domestic violence and other social problems, and the question of whether woman battering is a special case that differs from other forms of social violence. The volume also looks at the tensions between groups of women within the movement, and how to address differences based on race, class or other dimensions of power. Finally, the book explores the contentious issue of how to acknowledge forms of female aggression while still preserving a gender analysis of intimate partner violence.
In attending to narrative dynamics in the history of domestic violence work, Hard Knocks presents a radical re-reading of the contribution of psychology to feminist interventions and activism. The book is ideal reading for scholars, activists, advocates and policy planners involved in domestic violence, and is suitable for students of psychology, social work, sociology and criminology." - (publisher's

- Prosecuting Domestic Violence: A Philosophical Analysis.
-
By Michelle Madden Dempsey.
Oxford, UK; New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 2009.
Series: Oxford Monographs on Criminal Law and Criminal Justice.
"What should public prosecutors do when victims withdraw support for domestic violence prosecutions? The answer to this question that motivates the investigation undertaken in this book defends the claim that (other things being equal) domestic violence prosecutors should respond as feminists.
This claim is intended as a provocative formulation of the proposition that domestic violence prosecutors should act for reasons generated by the value of reconstituting communities as less patriarchal.
This thesis is defended first by developing a general theory of prosecutorial practical reasoning, and then by considering the prosecution of domestic violence offences in particular. Along the way, this book provides an original account of the nature of prosecutorial action, the values that can be realized through such action, and the relationship between these values and the practical reasoning of criminal prosecutors.
Moreover, it provides original analyses of two key concepts, domestic violence and patriarchy, and explains the relevance of the latter to a proper understanding of the former.
These insights are put to work in answering the motivating question stated above, and provide answers both in terms of what prosecutors would be justified in doing, and what prosecutors should do in order to be effective." - (publisher's

- Rape as a Part of Domestic Violence: A Qualitative Analysis of Case Narratives and Official Reports.
-
By Katharine Tellis.
El Paso, TX: LFB Scholarly Pub., 2010.
Series: Criminal Justice: Recent Scholarship.
"Tellis examines the situational context of intimate partner rapes reported to the police. Her study seeks to make sexual assault visible in domestic violence by using extant typologies to examine the control context and co-occurrence of physical and sexual assault in intimate partner rape. Findings reveal a predominance of Intimate Terrorism and gratuitous physical violence in over half of the cases, but suspects use threats to foster victim compliance in the majority of cases. Future research must continue to document the efficacy of nonviolent control mechanisms that are emotional and psychological in nature such as threats." - (publisher's

- Rebuilding Lives after Domestic Violence: Understanding Long-Term Outcomes.
-
By Hilary Abrahams; foreword by Jenni Murray.
London, UK; Philadelphia, PA: Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2010.
"Rebuilding Lives after Domestic Violence examines in-depth the long-term outcomes for women who have suffered domestic violence and abuse, based on interviews conducted over seven years. Through these interviews the author reveals the factors which help or hinder a successful transition from abusive relationship to independent living. The women interviewed provide an insight into the lengthy and difficult process of rebuilding their lives, and offer messages and advice to those working with women who have endured similar experiences. The author examines issues the women commonly face such as finding safe and independent accommodation, building practical and emotional support systems and relationships, and issues surrounding their children. She also discusses service provision and draws together the factors that contribute to a successful and independent life. This unique book will be essential reading for all those involved in working with women who have experienced domestic violence and abuse as well as those responsible for service provision and policy development." - (publisher's

- Safeguarding Children Living with Trauma and Family Violence: Evidence-Based Assessment, Analysis and Planning Interventions.
-
By Arnon Bentovim and others; foreword by Brigid Daniel.
London, UK; Philadelphia, PA: Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2009.
Series: Best Practice in Working with Children Series.
"Offering a systematic approach to evidence-based assessment and planning for children living with trauma and family violence, this practical book shows how to assess and analyse the needs of the child, make specialist assessments where there are continuing safeguarding concerns (using the Assessment Framework) and plan effective child-centred and outcome-focused interventions. The authors analyse the impact of exposure to a climate of trauma and family violence on a child's bioneurological development and on their capacity to form attachments and to develop and reflect on relationships through childhood and adolescence into adulthood. They bring together the assessment of children in need with the evaluation of significant harm and risk, and potential for rehabilitation, and also explore the application of evidence-based approaches to intervention.
This book is an essential tool for all front-line practitioners working with child protection, including social workers, child and adolescent mental health practitioners, police officers, probation workers and domestic violence organizations. It is also suitable for undergraduate, postgraduate and post-qualifying students. The titles in the "Best Practice in Working with Children" series are written for the multi-agency professionals working to promote children's welfare and protect them from harm. Each book in the series draws on current research into what works best for children, providing practical, realistic suggestions as to how practitioners in social work, health and education can work together to promote the resilience and safety of the children in their care. Brigid Daniel is Professor of Social Work in the Department of Applied Social Science at the University of Stirling. She is co-author of several textbooks and practice resources on child care and protection. She was a member of the multi-disciplinary team that carried out a national ministerial review of child protection practice in Scotland." - (publisher's

- Social Work and Family Violence: Theories, Assessment, and Intervention.
-
By Joan C. McClennen.
New York, NY: Springer, ©2010.
"To competently serve families, social work students must understand the theories and issues surrounding family violence. This innovative textbook comprehensively discusses three types of family violence: child abuse and maltreatment, intimate partner violence, and elder abuse.
Discussions on assessments and interventions are provided for the adult victims of family violence, adult survivors of child abuse, child witnesses of domestic violence, adolescent victims of dating violence, elderly victims, and perpetrators of abuse. Assessment procedures and evidence-based treatments are also discussed. This book also covers a broad range of vulnerable populations and addresses their needs for particular services, legislative action, and strategies for effective intervention. The book meets the criteria of the Council on Social Work Education with its focus on ethics, populations-at-risk, and diversity." - (publisher's

- Strengths-Based Batterer Intervention: A New Paradigm in Ending Family Violence.
-
Edited by Peter Lehmann and Catherine A. Simmons.
New York, NY: Springer Pub., ©2009.
"Strengths-based batterer intervention programs serve as a unique approach to intimate partner violence (IPV), building on individual strengths-not deficits-to help IPV offenders end their abusive lifestyles. This book assists counselors in providing IPV offenders with the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to permanently change their offending behavior.
The book discusses emerging theories and presents cutting-edge batterer intervention techniques that use positive psychology, such as solution-focused therapy, strengths-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and motivational interviewing.
Chapters are conveniently organized by therapeutic model, each discussing the latest research, core concepts, objectives, and applications
Case studies, both real-life and hypothetical, presenting quotes from and dialogues with offenders undergoing treatment
Counselor tools, including exercises, questions, and assessment strategies that build on the offenders' strengths and competencies
Family violence professionals must recognize the power their clients have to utilize their strengths, skills, talents, desires, and dreams. It is from these strengths that clients will be able to transform themselves into the people they want to be." - (publisher's

- "Trivial Complaints": The Role of Privacy in Domestic Violence Law and Activism in the U.S..
-
By Kirsten S. Rambo.
New York, NY: Columbia University Press, ©2009.
Series: Gutenberg-e Series.
"Trivial Complaints explores the historical relationship between privacy and domestic violence through an analysis of litigation and activism. The state has traditionally hesitated in responding to domestic violence, characterizing it as a "private" family matter. The discourse of privacy incorporates presumptions about race, class, and sexuality, and this volume examines the ramifications of such assumptions for victims and activists.
Kirsten S. Rambo begins with an analysis of courts' and activists' responses to domestic violence during the late nineteenth century and continues through to the late twentieth century, when the modern battered women's movement emerged on the heels of the battle to secure abortion rights. Rambo explores the seemingly contradictory yet often complementary ways in which the discourse of privacy has been shaped by both movements seeking justice for women. She further examines concepts of privacy as applied to same-sex relationships and domestic violence, and ultimately considers alternative models of privacy that are egalitarian and rooted in empowerment.
About the Author: Kirsten S. Rambo is the executive director of the Georgia Commission on Family Violence and a former visiting assistant professor of women's studies at Emory University." - (publisher's

- The War against Domestic Violence.
-
Edited by Lee E. Ross.
Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press/Taylor & Francis, ©2010.
"Violence, including intimate partner violence, is a leading cause of death, disability, and hospitalization in the United States and other regions worldwide. Despite growing awareness, the numbers of reported and unreported incidents continue to rise. Drawing on the contributions of criminal justice practitioners and academic theorists who bring sober insight to a highly charged issue, The War Against Domestic Violence offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary study of this phenomenon.
The book provides rare glimpses of topics inadequately covered in the literature, allowing readers to understand and appreciate the complexity of domestic violence while also promoting a variety of effective strategies to combat its continued rise. The multi-layered approach of this volume and the input from the expert contributors from varied backgrounds are destined to stimulate the interest of a growing and diverse audience." - (publisher's
