A Selected List
- SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research, 3rd edition.
Edited by Norman K. Denzin and Yvonna S. Lincoln.
Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications, ©2005.
"The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research, Third Edition, represents the state of the art for the theory and practice of qualitative inquiry. Built on the foundations of the landmark first and second editions (1994, 2000), the Third Edition moves qualitative research boldly into the 21st century. The editors and authors ask how the practices of qualitative inquiry can be used to address issues of social justice in this new century. As with the second edition, the Third Edition represents virtually a new handbook. There are 14 totally new topics not touched upon in previous editions, including, among others, indigenous research, institutional review boards and human subject research, critical and performance ethnography, arts-based inquiry, narrative inquiry, Foucault, the ethics and strategies of on-line research, cultural and investigative poetics, and the politics of evaluation. Over half of the 45 chapters are written by authors new to the Handbook. Returning authors have thoroughly revised and updated their chapters. The organization is clear and sensible, moving from the general to the specific and from the past to the present and the future.
The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research is far-reaching and comprehensive, featuring a virtual "Who's Who" in the human sciences. It is an absolutely essential text for any scholar interested in the art, science, and practice of qualitative research, as well as a critical resource for all academic and public libraries." - (publisher's description)

- Landscape of Qualitative Research: Theories and Issues, 2nd edition.
Edited by Norman K. Denzin and Yvonna S. Lincoln.
Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage, ©2003.
"The landscape of qualitative research attempts to put the field of qualitative research in context. Part I locates the field, starting with history, then action research and the academy, research for whom?, and the politics and ethics of qualitative research. Part II isolates what we regard as the major historical and contemporary paradigms now structuring and influencing qualitative research in the human disciplines. The chapters move from competing paradigms (positivist, postpositivist, constructivist, critical theory) to specific interpretive perspectives, feminisms, racialized discourses, cultural studies, sexualities, and queer theory. Part III considers the future of qualitative research...." - (publisher's description)

- Qualitative Approaches to Criminal Justice: Perspectives from the Field.
Edited by Mark R. Pogrebin.
"The growth in popularity of qualitative research in the social sciences over the last two decades has been nothing short of amazing. Qualitative Approaches to Criminal Justice: Perspectives from the Field reveals some of the reasons for the success and stature of this unique methodological approach.
Exploring the real life experiences of criminal justice professionals, this anthology is the first book to focus solely on the use of qualitative research in various components of the criminal justice system. The collection is organized from two criminal justice perspectives: one qualitatively oriented and the other system oriented, including overviews of each qualitative method and commentaries that analyze the research techniques. Case studies illustrating actual fieldwork practices bring theory vividly to life. Qualitative Approaches to Criminal Justice: Perspectives from the Field is multi-faceted in both its content and application. Through its investigative techniques, which rely mainly on observations, participant observation, and open-ended interviews, qualitative research reveals parts of the social world that remain hidden to more traditional methodological techniques." - The Qualitative Researcher's Companion.
By A. Michael Huberman and Matthew B. Miles.
Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications, ©2002.
"There is no longer any question that qualitative inquiry is fundamental to the enterprise of social science research, with a broad reach and a history all its own. This book seeks to introduce--to reintroduce--readers to selections that provide a solid intellectual grounding in the area of qualitative research. Thoughtfully and painstakingly culled from over a thousand candidate articles by coeditors A. Michael Huberman and the late Matthew B. Miles (co-authors of the seminal Qualitative Data Analysis), The Qualitative Researcher's Companion examines the theoretical underpinnings, methodological perspectives, and empirical approaches that are crucial to the understanding and practice of qualitative inquiry. Incisive, provocative, and drawn from across the many disciplines that employ qualitative inquiry, The Qualitative Researcher's Companion is a key addition to the bookshelf of anyone involved in the research act." - (publisher's description)

- Transforming Qualitative Data: Description, Analysis, and Interpretation.
By Harry F. Wolcott.
Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications, ©1994.
"After the glamour of working in the field is over, you now face the daunting challenge of transforming your field notes and interview tapes into a completed study. But where do you start? In Transforming Qualitative Data, Harry F. Wolcott guides you through the process of completing your research study. Beginning with an introductory chapter that presents his views on ethnography, he explores the transformation process by breaking it down into three related activities: description, analysis, and interpretation. To illustrate each point, he critically examines his own work, using nine of his previous studies as illustrations. Then he shows you how to learn--and to teach--qualitative research by applying the three principles outlined in the volume.
Written with the usual wit and brilliance shown in Wolcott's work, Transforming Qualitative Data is a major statement on doing research by one of the master ethnographers of our time." (publisher's description)
