Aegean Archaeology Bibliography

Selected Research Resources

The University of Texas at Arlington Bibliography Series

John Dillard, Social Work and Social Sciences Librarian,
dillard@uta.edu - - SWEL: (817) 272-7518

"Aegean" is a geographical term referring to that part of the Mediterranean Sea between modern Greece and Turkey, including the Cycladic Islands and the large island of Crete. Among scholars the word Aegean has taken on chronological dimensions, designating the archaeological cultures of the prehistoric period (i.e., Stone and Bronze Ages, until ca. 1000 BC) in that region. The best documented Aegean archaeological cultures are the Minoans in Crete and the Mycenaeans in mainland Greece, both dating to the middle centuries of the second millennium BC.

The bibliography below offers a selection of titles relevant to many of the key research questions pursued by archaeologists working in the Aegean. This bibliography is in no way a comprensive survey of that research, inasmuch as it includes very few primary excavation reports and deals only with works in English; nonetheless, it should serve as a useful introduction to the scholarship for students of Aegean archaeology. (Dr. Karl M. Petruso)

Aegean Prehistory: A Review.
Aegean Prehistory: A Review cover image Edited by Tracey Cullen.
Boston, MA: Archaeological Institute of America. 2001.
Series: American Journal of Archaeology, Supplement;1.
"Aegean prehistory has developed over the 20th century into a distinctive and vibrant area of archaeological research. The past few decades, in particular, have seen a dramatic reorientation and expansion of goals and methods as well as a flood of new fieldwork in the Aegean. 'Aegean Prehistory: A Review' contains detailed syntheses of recent research, originally published in the American Journal of Archaeology and newly updated here. The volume conveys the diversity and richness of current approaches to Aegean prehistory while also marshalling an enormous amount of information pertaining to field projects, museum studies, analyses of materials and texts, and competing interpretations. With its expansive coverage, the book will be of great interest to all who wish to learn more about intellectual trends and current archaeological discoveries in this part of the Mediterranean." - (publisher's description)

Archaic State Interaction: The Eastern Mediterranean in the Bronze Age.
Archaic State Interaction: The Eastern Mediterranean in the Bronze Age cover image Edited by William A. Parkinson and Michael L. Galaty.
Santa Fe, NM: School for Advanced Research Press, 2010.
Series: School for Advanced Research Advanced Seminar Series.
Note: Papers from seminar held March. 11-15, 2007 in Santa Fe, NM.
"In current archaeological research the failure to find common ground between world-systems theory believers and their counterparts has resulted in a stagnation of theoretical development in regards to modeling how early state societies interacted with their neighbors. This book is an attempt to redress these issues. By shifting the theoretical focus away from questions of state evolution to state interaction, the authors develop anthropological models for understanding how ancient states interacted with one another and with societies of different scales of economic and political organization. One of their goals has been to identify a theoretical middle ground that is neither dogmatic nor dismissive. The result is an innovative approach to modeling social interaction that will be helpful in exploring the relationship between social processes that occur at different geographic scales and over different temporal durations. The scholars who participated in the SAR Advanced Seminar that resulted in this book used a particular geographic and temporal context as a case study for developing anthropological models of interaction that are cross-cultural in scope but still deal well with the idiosyncrasies of specific culture histories." - (publisher's description)

Architecture of Minoan Crete: Constructing Identity in the Aegean Bronze Age.
Architecture of Minoan Crete: Constructing Identity in the Aegean Bronze Age cover image By John C. McEnroe.
Austin, TX: University of Texas Press, 2010.
"Ever since Sir Arthur Evans first excavated at the site of the Palace at Knossos in the early twentieth century, scholars and visitors have been drawn to the architecture of Bronze Age Crete. Much of the attraction comes from the geographical and historical uniqueness of the island. Equidistant from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Minoan Crete is on the shifting conceptual border between East and West, and chronologically suspended between history and prehistory. In this culturally dynamic context, architecture provided more than physical shelter; it embodied meaning. Architecture was a medium through which Minoans constructed their notions of social, ethnic, and historical identity: the buildings tell us about how the Minoans saw themselves, and how they wanted to be seen by others.
Architecture of Minoan Crete is the first comprehensive study of the entire range of Minoan architecture--including houses, palaces, tombs, and cities--from 7000 BC to 1100 BC. John C. McEnroe synthesizes the vast literature on Minoan Crete, with particular emphasis on the important discoveries of the past twenty years, to provide an up-to-date account of Minoan architecture. His accessible writing style, skillful architectural drawings of houses and palaces, site maps, and color photographs make this book inviting for general readers and visitors to Crete, as well as scholars." - (publisher's description)

The Cambridge Companion to the Aegean Bronze Age cover image Edited by Cynthia W. Shelmerdine.
Cambridge, UK; New York, NY: Cambridge University Press, 2008.
"This book is a comprehensive up-to-date survey of the Aegean Bronze Age, from its beginnings to the period following the collapse of the Mycenaean palace system. In essays by leading authorities commissioned especially for this volume, it covers the history and the material culture of Crete, Greece, and the Aegean Islands from c. 3000-1100 BCE, as well as topics such as trade, religions, and economic administration. Intended as a reliable, readable introduction for university students, it will also be useful to scholars in related fields within and outside classics. The contents of this book are arranged chronologically and geographically, facilitating comparison between the different cultures. Within this framework, the cultures of the Aegean Bronze Age are assessed thematically and combine both material culture and social history." - (publisher's description)

Escaping the Labyrinth: The Cretan Neolithic in Context.
Escaping the Labyrinth: The Cretan Neolithic in Context cover image Edited by Valasia Isaakidou and Peter D. Tomkins.
Oxford, UK: Oxbow Books; Oakville, CT: David Brown Book Co. [distributor], ©2008.
Series: Sheffield Studies in Aegean Archaeology; 8.
"Beneath the Bronze Age 'Palace of Minos', Neolithic Knossos is one of the earliest known farming settlements in Europe and perhaps the longest-lived. For 3000 years, Neolithic Knossos was also perhaps one of very few settlements on Crete and, for much of this time, maintained a distinctive material culture. This volume radically enhances understanding of the important, but hitherto little known, Neolithic settlement and culture of Crete. Thirteen papers, from the tenth Sheffield Aegean Round Table in January 2006, explore two aspects of the Cretan Neolithic: the results of recent re-analysis of a range of bodies of material from J.D. Evans' excavations at EN-FN Knossos; and new insights into the Cretan Late and Final Neolithic and the contentious belated colonisation of the rest of island, drawing on both new and old fieldwork. Papers in the first group examine the idiosyncratic Knossian ceramic chronology (P. Tomkins), human figurines from a gender perspective (M. Mina), funerary practices (S. Triantaphyllou), chipped stone technology (J. Conolly), land and-use and its social implications (V. Isaakidou). Those in the second group, present a re-study of LN Katsambas (N. Galanidou and K. Mandeli), evidence for later Neolithic exploration of eastern Crete (T. Strasser), Ceremony and consumption at late Final Neolithic Phaistos (S. Todaro and S. Di Tonto), Final Neolithic settlement patterns (K. Nowicki), the transition to the Early Bronze Age at Kephala Petra (Y. Papadatos), and a critical appraisal of Final Neolithic 'marginal colonisation' (P. Halstead). In conclusion, C. Broodbank places the Cretan Neolithic within its wider Mediterranean context and J.D. Evans provides an autobiographical account of a lifetime of insular Neolithic exploration." - (publisher's description)

From Minos to Midas: Ancient Cloth Production in the Aegean and in Anatolia.
From Minos to Midas: Ancient Cloth Production in the Aegean and in Anatolia cover image By Brendan Burke.
Oxford, UK; Oakville, CT: Oxbow Books, c2010.
Series: Ancient Textiles Series; 7.
"Textile production was of greater value and importance to people in the past than any other social craft activity; everyone depended on cloth. As with other craft goods, such as pottery, metal objects, or ivory carving, the large-scale production and exchange of textiles required specialization and some degree of centralization. This book takes an explicitly economic approach to textile production, focusing on regional centers, most often referred to as palaces, to understand the means by which states in the Aegean and Anatolia financed themselves through cloth industries. From this, it is possible to look for evidence of social stratification, inter-regional exchange, and organized bureaucracies. Spanning multiple millennia and various sources of evidence, Burke illustrates the complex nature of cloth production, exchange, and consumption and what this says about individual societies and prehistoric economies, as well as how developments in cloth industries reflect larger aspects of social organization." - (publisher's description)

The Goddess and the Bull: A Study in Minoan-Mycenaean Mythology.
By Helen Benigni and Barbara Carter; edited with a foreword by Miriam Robbins Dexter.
Lanham, MD: University Press of America, ©2007.
"The Goddess and the Bull defines and describes the aspects of the Mother Goddess as an archetype. Through this study, the role of the feminine comes to light as one of the most important facets of the Minoan-Mycenaean culture. By examining the feminine emphasis in the Bronze Age world of religion and science, the study of the Goddess changes our views of ancient cultures such as this one." - (publisher's description)

Greek Writing from Knossos to Homer: A Linguistic Interpretation of the Origin of the Greek Alphabet and the Continuity of Ancient Greek Literacy.
By Roger D. Woodard.
New York, NY: Oxford University Press. 1997.
"Greek Writing from Knossos to Homer examines the origin of the Greek alphabet. Departing from previous accounts, Roger Woodard places the advent of the alphabet within an unbroken continuum of Greek literacy beginning in the Mycenaean era. He argues that the creators of the Greek alphabet, who adapted the Phoenician consonantal script, were scribes accustomed to writing Greek with the syllabic script of Cyprus.
Certain characteristic features of the Cypriot script - for example, its strategy for representing consonant sequences and elements of Cypriot Greek phonology - were transferred to the new alphabetic script. Proposing a Cypriot origin of the alphabet at the hands of previously literate adapters brings clarity to various problems of the alphabet, such as the Greek use of the Phoenician sibilant letters. The alphabet, rejected by the post-Bronze Age "Mycenaean" culture of Cyprus, was exported west to the Aegean, where it gained a foothold among a then illiterate Greek people emerging from the Dark Age. Woodard's study, a combination of philological and epigraphical investigation with linguistic theory, should be of interest to both scholars and students of classics, linguistics, and Near Eastern studies." - (publisher's description)

Mycenaean Greece, Mediterranean Commerce, and the Formation of Identity.
Mycenaean Greece, Mediterranean Commerce, and the Formation of Identity cover image By Bryan E. Burns.
New York, NY: Cambridge University Press, 2010.
"The impact of long-distance exchange on the developing cultures of Bronze Age Greece has been a subject of debate since Schliemann's discovery of the Shaft Graves at Mycenae. In Mycenaean Greece, Mediterranean Commerce, and the Formation of Identity, Bryan E. Burns offers a new understanding of the effects of Mediterranean trade on Mycenaean Greece by considering the possibilities represented by the traded objects themselves in their Mycenaean contexts. A range of imported artifacts was distinguished by their precious material, uncommon style, and foreign writing, signaling their status as tangible evidence of connections beyond the Aegean. The consumption of these exotic symbols spread beyond the highest levels of society, and they functioned as symbols of external power sources. Burns argues that the consumption of exotic items thus enabled the formation of alternate identities and the resistance of palatial power." - (publisher's description)

The Prehistory of Asia Minor: From Complex Hunter-Gatherers to Early Urban Societies.
The Prehistory of Asia Minor: From Complex Hunter-Gatherers to Early Urban Societies cover image By Bleda S. Düring.
New York, NY: Cambridge University Press, 2011.
"In this book, Bleda Düring offers an archaeological analysis of Asia Minor, the area equated with much of modern-day Turkey, from 20,000 to 2,000 BC. During this period human societies moved from small-scale hunter-gatherer groups to complex and hierarchical communities with economies based on agriculture and industry. Dr. Düring traces the spread of the Neolithic way of life, which ultimately reached across Eurasia, and the emergence of key human developments, including the domestication of animals, metallurgy, fortified towns, and long-distance trading networks. Situated at the junction between Europe and Asia, Asia Minor has often been perceived as a bridge for the movement of technologies and ideas. By contrast, this book argues that cultural developments followed a distinctive trajectory in Asia Minor from as early as 9,000 BC." - (publisher's description)

"When the Greek island of Santorini, classically known as Thera, erupted dramatically in 1613 BC (+/- 13 years), it produced one of the largest explosions ever witnessed, thereby possibly giving rise to the legend of Atlantis. This so-called 'Minoan' eruption triggered tsunamis that devastated coastal settlements in the region, and on Santorini it left behind a Bronze Age Pompeii, which is currently being excavated. Thriving Bronze Age settlements on the island - rich in colorful wall paintings and highly sophisticated pottery - were buried under thick layers of volcanic ash. The ejection of an immense volume of dust into the atmosphere also altered global climate for several years. The author, a well-known geologist, blends the thrill of scientific discovery with a popular presentation of the geology, archeology, history, peoples, and environmental settings of the island group of Santorini. He not only gives a comprehensive overview of the volcanic island and its past, but also reports on the latest discoveries: The finding, for example, of the olive trees which had been buried alive by the Minoan eruption has made it possible now to give a direct and precise radiocarbon date for the volcanic catastrophe. Furthermore, he seeks to assign certain geological structures, such as faulted rocks, red lavas and harbor sites, as depicted on the Bronze Age frescos from Santorini, to still-existing details in the Santorini landscape of today." - (publisher's description)

The Atlas of World Archaeology.
The Atlas of World Archaeology cover image Edited by Paul Bahn.
New York, NY: Checkmark Books. ©2000
"The Atlas of World Archeology takes readers on an archeological journey around the globe, from the origins of humankind to early historical times. Written by an international team of experts in the field, the atlas combines authoritative yet lively text with a wealth of full-color maps and features. 200 illustrations. 80 maps. The Atlas of World Archaeology traces the early story of humankind in all parts of the world and demonstrates how archaeologists are constantly adding to our database of knowledge. Readers can follow the story of human evolution through different stages in history, capturing the fascinating transformations made during each time period. Among the book's many highlights are: The First Peoples, including the earliest hominids, from Homo habilis to the Neanderthals, their tools, shelter, art, and technology, and the global spread of modern humans; The Postglacial Revolutions, including the transition from the Ice Age to emerging civilization, the use of fire and such secondary technology as the wheel and the plow, and the formation of writing systems; The Rise of Civilization, including the agriculture of the Near East, the Bronze Age trade of Western Asia, the Iron Age of Southeast Asia, Predynastic Egypt, the Americas, the Maya, and the Inca Empire. Bahn (archaeologist and author) and Barry Cunliff (emeritus, U. of Oxford) present an international team of experts who trace the story of human development in all parts of the world and demonstrate how archaeologists are constantly adding to our knowledge. The first part starts with the emergence of the earliest hominids in Africa and describes their evolution and spread throughout the world before the end of the last Ice Age. The second offers global coverage of major advances achieved by humankind in the next 10,000 years. The third divides the world into five broad geographical regions to take a closer look at these advances and to examine significant changes in human development in each one." - (publisher's description)
