Book Reviews -- How to Find Them

Book reviews are usually the first critical response to a new book-length publication. Reviews can often help the researcher to understand and appreciate the work reviewed. While not every book published is reviewed, the vast majority of serious academic or creative new titles are reviewed. Reviews usually begin to appear in newspapers, magazines, journals, or on the web within a few days of the book's appearance. Reviews often continue to appear up to several years after the book was published. While not every review is indexed, this listing of indexing sources should enable the researcher to locate many hundreds of thousands of reviews.

The ingenta Library Gateway is a searchable database of more than 11 million citations from over 20,000 journals in all subject areas. Electronic, fax and Ariel document delivery is available for many of their citations. The microfilm reels for the Times Literary Supplement have the call number AP 4 T45. Each volume has a table in the front which indicates which pages are in which issues of a given year.
