Employee Recognition Committee

Annual Report 1999/2000

Members: Laura Blessing (ex officio), Mary Jo Handke (Secretary), Pat Madison, Donita Maligi, Amy May, Barbara Howser (Chair)

Regular Meetings were held on the first Tuesday of the month at 11 am, usually in the Administrative Conference Room. There were only two months when we did not meet due to no agenda items.

Recommendation Letters Review

When writing recommendation letters for Tom Wilding’s approval, ERC decided to send a draft to the committee for review prior to sending to Tom.

ERC Checklist

This year the Committee developed an Accountability Checklist for Recommendations, to make the processes of ERC from receipt of nomination to the photo of the awardee(s) run more efficiently and make ERC members more accountable. Each member was also given a supply of billing forms to route to the awardee(s) if they so chose to have their photo taken for the awards display case. An example of how the billing form is to be filled out was included. It is located at Q:\MIS\FORMS\EmployeeRec.com.chklst This checklist is included in this report.

ERC 99/00 Members Resignations

Unfortunately, we lost two valued members of the 99/00 ERC year. Pat Madison, a continuing member from 98/99 ERC resigned her Library position to take a position in the Dept. of Biology. Amy May, another continuing member from 98/99 resigned her Library position to take a position outside the University. The committee chose not to call for volunteer replacements.

Employee Recognition Committee Policy/Charge Amended

ERC's charge was amended to include missing information about administrative leave for classified staff. This information is the last item in the Charge.

Award Display Case Location

The issue of the location of the award display case was discussed several times during the year. Due to the construction of the Internet Café (Sam’s Click Café) and the Current Periodicals Move in the basement, the location of the display case remains an issue. Two options discussed were moving it to second floor or using a wall case (such as the one on 4th floor).

Web Page for Awards Display

ERC discussed putting up a Web page for the awards display several times, but this idea was tabled, due to privacy issues. During the year several awardees chose not to have their photographs taken for one reason or another. The idea was brought up again at the Sept. 2000 meeting, but the committee decided to send this item to the 2000/2001 committee. Another suggestion for publicizing those who win ERC awards was to send awardee’s names to UTA Today.

Future of Employee Recognition Committee and ERC Members Nominated for Awards

Since its creation, ERC has reported directly to Tom via Laura Blessing, who is ex officio member of ERC. This year questions arose as to the low number of volunteers for committee work. LMC decided that Tom Wilding, Julie Alexander, and Gerald Saxon would discuss what to do with committees in general. With this, any existing committee membership (including the 99/00 ERC) would be status quo until they submitted their report. ERC 99/00 members continued serving through November 2000.

Be Contagious Award

This award is given by the University’s Staff Advisory Council. ERC discussed whether this was under our purview to promote. We concurred that we should ask Carleen Dolan or Kay Punneo to promote this within the Libraries organization.

Green Thumb Award

Early in the year, when the Internet Café was in the planning stages, Bob Samson asked for volunteers to "maintenance" live plants that were part of the ambience plan of the area. Bob had suggested (possibly in jest, but not sure) that ERC take on an award for the best maintained plant. Even though it seems to be a moot point at this time, ERC Chair Barbara Howser took the idea to Carleen Dolan, 99/00 Library Staff Association President. ERC felt the staff association the better venue for this type of award. Carleen indicated she’d take this the Staff Association Executive Board.

ERC 99/00 Award Recipients

Mary Jo Handke began a list of the 1999/2000 Award recipients by category and when the award was presented. It is up to date and is included in this report.

STAR Award List

Howser compiled a list of recipients of the STAR Award since its inception in 1993. It is included in this report.
