Employee Recognition Committee

Employee Recognition Awards Committee Minutes, September 21, 1992

The first meeting of the Awards Committee was held in the Administrative Conference Room at 9:30 a.m. Elected members and their terms are: Betty Strmiska and Gerald Saxon, a two year term; Dendra Alford and Jim Wellvang, one year. Members present: Saxon, Alford, Wellvang, and Shirley Sheets, chair. Strmiska was unable to attend.

Two procedural details for awards are still undecided: approval of the special parking space and setting a monetary amount for the STAR Award. Chief Gay has denied a special parking space, but a memo with additional information and requesting reconsideration has been sent to him. A list of non-monetary awards was shared and discussed, including Alford's suggestion to display a black and white photograph of those receiving Bright Ideas Awards in a public area on the first floor. It was decided to incorporate Alford's idea into the procedures, and place a photograph, information about the awardee, and the reason for the award on an easel near the Information Desk. A monetary award of $350.00 was suggested for the STAR Award. Saxon will present this to the Friends of the Library Advisory Council on September 24th and ask that the Friends underwrite this amount and include a year's membership in the Friends. (Note: The Friends Advisory Council voted unanimously to fund $350.00 for the STAR Award and, in addition, to give a one-year membership in the Friends to the recipient. On September 30th, Chief Gay denied for the second time a special parking space behind the Central Library for winners of the Bright Ideas Award.)

Decisions made:

  • Ideas supporting nominees for Bright Ideas Awards may date back to January 1992.
  • The original nominator of a Bright Ideas Award recipient is responsible for submitting additional support letters to the Committee so that he or she may be considered for the STAR Award.
  • The Committee will meet early each month to consider nominations received by the first of the month. Announcement of the award(s) will be made immediately.
  • Minutes of the Committee will be placed on the LAN.
  • A memo to the staff announcing the Committee's readiness to receive nominees will be issued as soon as possible.

Committee members were reminded that SPEC Kit 173 is about staff awards and is available from Central Library Reserve.
