Library Recognition Program Committee Minutes, August 2, 1994All members were present except Gerald Saxon. There were no award nominations to consider. Information about recognition of teams or groups (which was meager) was shared. The name change above reflects the evolution of this committee. Discussion included ideas for recognizing individuals, groups, faculty, and student assistants. Recognition of faculty will be forwarded to the Outreach Committee. Names of awards suggested were Outstanding Library Student Assistant Award, Rookie of the Year, and the Applause Award. No concrete decisions were made, but it was decided to meet again in two weeks to determine the methodology and specific criteria for recognition of groups and student assistants. The idea of a faculty award came from Washington State University (who adopted it from Texas A&M) where suggestions for candidates are requested from the entire campus. A committee of library staff members reviews the submissions and selects the faculty member to be honored, based on six criteria: personal use of the libraries, efforts to encourage students to use the libraries, interaction and cooperation with libraries' staff, service on library committees, and evidence of appreciation for and a positive view of the libraries. This committee was given the charge to consider criteria and management of a new practice for UTA, that of administrative leave for outstanding performance by classified staff. After much discussion, it is the feeling of this committee that since administrative leave is based on performance appraisals, the responsibility to determine deserving classified staff belongs to the Library Administration. However, names of staff members being considered for administrative leave could be forwarded to this committee for supplemental information, both formal and informal. Leveta reminded the committee that articles should be placed in the Shorthorn and the Faculty/Staff News announcing recipients of the STAR Award. |
