Many interesting data can be derived by using an electronic phone book (how many
physician offices are there in a zip code; how many nursing homes are there in an area
code; how many supermarkets are there available to a zip code population?) One phone book
UTA student faculty and staff may use within the Libraries is:

U.S. Census Bureau (http://www.census.gov)
US population Census data is collected once every 10 years. The last census was 1990, the
next census is 2000.
Local census projections and estimations are available through (as well as
lots of other regional data):

A surprising amount of data about a community is available through the school systems
public records. One can estimate poverty level based on percentage of children in a school
on free or reduced lunch. One can estimate language skills of a community by considering
number of children in English as a Second Language programs. To obtain specific school
level data, start at the Texas Education Agency's Texas Academic Excellence System search
page:

At UTA, the catalog, PULSe will provide
the same information a paper card catalog as well as information as whether the item is
checked out or not. PULSe will tell of whole books, whole journals, and other materials the
UTA libraries own. It can also aid in determining exactly which issues of which journals
are available in the library but will not provide data on articles within those issues.
