Vega Assignment 2

We know when we are succeeding when…

Library is Center of Academic Life

Campus-wide access to spatial data collections

Provide faculty with special research and instructional support

Information Commons providing research, teaching, and learning, with a strong digital focus

Provide access to production & presentation software and support (including faculty online teaching, distance learning, and videoconferences)

More integration between the library and class-room instruction

Library serves as a host for services provided by other university departments

Support all academic an intellectual needs of patrons at all levels of learning whether they be on campus or remote (Ex. new freshmen, grad students, returning students and faculty)

Developing relaxed and “social” atmosphere

Physical Space Promotes Research, Reflection, & Collaboration

Library as a neutral ground for individuals from various departments and groups to meet and share common concerns and goals

Cultural environment and a mechanisms that encourages, fosters, and nurtures evolutionary change

Collaborative work/study areas in addition to single work/study areas

Be prepared to accommodate a wide variety of learning styles and environments

Esthetic, stimulating, and open public spaces

Wireless-friendly buildings

Provides patrons with a seamless environment for contemplating, planning, researching and completing their their academic, intellectual, and personal work/research activities

Information Commons (see “Library is Center of Academic Life”)

More attractive buildings

Conduct appropriate data gathering to determine the changes affecting our learning and research environment and changes in user behavior

Virtual Space Offers Resources Anywhere, Anytime

Student-centered models of instruction, multimedia resources, and library databases into online course materials or tutorials to be delivered via the WWW

Access to extensive and appropriate in-house collections and dynamic 24/7 access to electronic periodical and monograph collection, large-date files, and graphical galleries

Faculty tend to use the library virtually for research

Digitization of unique resources providing access to special collections materials

All Resources & Services are Easy to Use

User-friendly, graphical access interfaces (card catalog and WWW)

Front help desk accessible by telephone, e-mail, WWW and walk-ins

Provide patrons one-stop access to library spaces, resources, and services

Close integration between books and technology

Fewer independent service desks with their own agendas in favor of more combined desks/departments which would promote the seamless library environment

Create access to information for education and research discovery

Need to be able to educate and connect with patrons as their information advisers, not as gatekeepers

Print materials continue to be important to researchers

Moving toward resources that are more geared toward everyday users (as opposed to librarians) and what they want

Use technologies to make search suggestions, correct spellings, suggest other resources, include excerpts from books (table of contents, etc.), etc.

Reevaluation of MARC – looking for a better, more extensible solution

Conduct appropriate data gathering to determine the changes affecting our learning and research environment and changes in user behavior

All Users are Information Fluent

Provide users assistance in developing and understanding the attributes and accuracy of complex datasets and how the data interacts with various software applications

Provide research guidance and technical support to our users

Literacy/Training programs providing educational support in library resources and services and to help foster critical inquiry skills

Provide access to distant collections/resources through document delivery

Develop evaluative skills in researchers

Users want to be independent researchers

Our Investment in Staff, Information Resources, & Technology Promotes Success & Learning

Library needs to be proactive in learning, understanding and acquiring new technology in order to remain viable and relevant

Create partnerships with other university departments and non-university organizations to identify crucial issues, challenges and opportunities in information technology and learn together how the university needs to define and fulfill it’s mission in a rapidly changing society

The library staff must be informed about activities and needs of faculty and students in other colleges and departments

Create a public service role for the university in regional problem solving

Flexible, well cross-trained professionals

Cooperation and collaboration among all library staff and departments

Integration

Dependable, in-house library technical support staff

Knowledgeable staff who know their way around publishing and library systems, and are able to use the technology with confidence, and can guide users in their search for
information

Library as a laboratory for testing new information management and distribution concepts and techniques

Anytime, anyplace work model for staff
