• Analog vs. Digital
• Converting analog to digital
• Jargon
  • Codec – compress and decompress files (WinZip, etc.) - Compression affects the quality, file size and streamability
  • Lossy – data compression techniques that attempts to eliminate unnecessary information – results in data loss
  • Lossless – compression technique which loses not data
• Audio formats
  • .wav – uncompressed version
  • .mp3/.mp4 – codec using lossy technology
  • .wma – similar to mp3 but smaller file size
  • .aiff – Mav version of .wav file
  • File size is important when streaming
  • There are additional formats but this is the most common
• Podcasting Overview
  • iPod is not required
  • rss feed that pushes content
  • not streaming, must download the file
  • must subscribe
• Podcasting players
  • Needed to interpret XML files
    • iTunes
    • .Winamp (subscriptions rather than podcast)
