Discussion ensued regarding length of Professional Forums
Action:
Meeting time increased to two (2) hours
Meeting Program:
Reorganization of SEL (Julie Alexander, Mary Castle, Antoinette Nelson)
- SEL will not be totally electronic
- Goal is to create space while retaining frequently
used, current materials
- Hope to be more useful for students
- Expect to be in same location until 2011
- Changes will make this possible
- Discussions are currently in progress about adding
computers in SEL, also new study rooms and additional staff offices
- Since it's unlikely the new Engineering Research
Building will be built soon, may consider possibly becoming 24/5 in SEL
- Approximately 30,000 books will be left in SEL
- Initial coverage in SEL after change will be the
past 15 years
- Last 10 years of journals will be left in SEL
- This will not be an annual process
- If something is recalled from the LCD three times
it will be added back into the SEL collection
- Materials related to health sciences will be moved to
Central Library because other materials in this subject are already at
Central
Concerns:
Does the name Science & Engineering Library accurately
reflect the library’s holding

- Peter Zhang, Ramona Holmes and myself attended a UNT
Student Forum at the Microsoft Office in Dallas on Thursday, 9/15 from
6-8pm. It was well attended by UNT SLIS students working on library degrees
and/or just finished/finishing. All practicing librarians (Academic,
School, Public, Special [legal, medical, law, corporate]) were all
represented at individual tables to talk w/students and answer any questions
about the profession, what are experiences have been, what courses we took,
what skills are we looking for in hiring, etc. I enjoyed it and encourage
anyone to do it.
- While at the UNT Student Forum, I met one of the UNT
Virtual Librarians, Leora Kemp who was promoting a new listserv. It’s
called “Librarians Unlimited Listserv” and serves as a line of communication
for all librarians, library staff & library school students in the DFW
metroplex to help keep lines of communication open between the various types
of libraries of events, etc. She was inviting all and anyone interested to
subscribe. To subscribe: send message to:
listserv@unt.edu and in the message are write: subscribe
libunlimited [followed by your first and last name w/o the brackets].
Leave the subject line blank. I have extra handouts (since I forgot to
bring them w/me) if anyone wants one, they can let me know.
