Julie Alexander, with the American Library Association (ALA) was chair of the Cultural Diversity Committee 2001-2002; served on the Council of Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA) Affiliates; in the Library Administration and Management Association, Human Resources Section, Publications Committee; and was on the Gale Research Award Jury. As a member of the Texas Library Association (TLA), Julie served on the Program Planning Committee for Dallas 2002 Conference, Dallas; she served on the Administration Roundtable; and was a Representative to the ALA Council of LAMA Affiliates. She was invited to attend the UNT President’s Council, Denton, March 14, 2002; Julie received a certificate of appreciation for her service on the University of North Texas, School of Library and Information Science Capital Campaign Steering Committee, July, 2002. The group surpassed its goal of $1,000,000 by 29%. In 2001 she contributed to "How to Learn More and Keep Up: A Guide to Bibliographic and Web Resources" by Abby Kratz, with Julie Alexander, Suzanne Brown, Patricia Finney. This was a chapter in Staff Development: A Practical Guide, 3rd edition revised and enlarged. Elizabeth Fuseler Avery, Terry Dahlin, and Deborah A. Carver, coordinating editors. American Library Association, 2001. In 2002 she wrote a 44 page history of the TLA’s College and University Library Division (CULD) for the Centennial Celebration of TLA. The time period for the Division covers 1902-2002.
Ruthie Brock was chair of the Arlington Public Library Foundation Board this past year. Submitted book chapter for publication with co-author, Carol Byrne: The Basic Business Library: Core Resources. Carol Byrne is a member, Public Relations Committee and Webmaster for Reference Round Table, Texas Library Association. Submitted book chapter for publication with co-author, Ruthie Brock: The Basic Business Library: Core Resources. Beverly Carver's minutes and treasurer’s reports from the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS)/Texas-Mexico Annual Meeting were published in The Medium, the chapter newsletter. She wrote a report from the ARLIS/Texas-Mexico Chapter, that was published in the ARLIS/NA Update. Mary Castle served on the TLA Acquisitions & Collection Development Round Table, as Councilor 1999-2002 and in an appointment to the TLA Scholarship and Research Committee, 2001. Maggie Dwyer published a review in Studies in American Indian Literature (SAIL) of Duane Niatum’s poetry collection The Crooked Beak of Love and presented a paper at the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment conference at Flagstaff, Arizona, in June 2002 “‘Do not think that I do not love you if I scream while I die’: Sacred Bones and the Hunt in American Indian Literature.” Kit Goodwin won the Texas Historical Foundation’s Journalistic Achievement Award, which honors excellence in the field of print media in recognition of articles or research dealing with Texas history or historical or cultural preservation. This was in connection with the Special Map Issue of Texas Heritage, a periodical published by the Texas Historical Foundation. She presented “UTA Libraries – High Tech, High Touch,” which described library services for Fort Worth students to the Advisory Board of UTA Fort Worth. With Tommie Wingfield. January, 2002. Sally Gross wrote 2 articles for the Compass Rose (Fall 2002) “Seek and Ye Shall Find – Retirement” and “NEH Awards Special Collections Second Grant.” Ann E. Hodges (along with two others) co-presented a workshop at the annual meeting of the Society of Southwest Archivists (SSA). She co-authored (with Gerald Saxon) another successful request for NEH preservation funding. She is the current Membership Chair of SSA. She was one of five presenters at SSA’s pre-conference workshop on grant writing. She completed her fifth year as editor of Descriptive Notes, the newsletter of the Description Section of the Society of American Archivists.
Karen Hopkins served as the TLA Centennial Circle Committee Representative and on the Centennial Conference Committee, and served as chair of the Texas Regional Group of Catalogers and Classifiers (TRGCC) from April 2001 to April 2002. She is currently a TRGCC Executive Board Member. She also serves on the TLA College and University Library Division, Legislative Committee (July 2002- present). At the South-Central Users Group Meeting (SC-VUGM) in October 2000 she made a presentation called "Working With the LCSH Files in Voyager." With the ALA, Karen served on the Information Today Library of the Future Award Jury as a member from June 2001-June 2002. Ramona Holmes was awarded a Fellowship for Certificate of Advanced Study in Digital Image Management beginning Fall 2001. The award came in Spring 2001. She taught a graduate level course (Metadata) Fall 2001 at the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Science. Leveta Hord’s external professional accomplishments included serving as a TLA Centennial Representative 1998-2002 and Councilor 1999-2002 and on the TLA Nominating Committee. Helen Hough team-taught with Dr. Lorrie Hegstad for NURS5308, Nursing Informatics in Fall 2001. She was a panelist at a local Medical Library Association meeting, Jan. 2002, had Test and Measures database accepted by UTA Office of Research as a registered copyrightable publication, June 2002 and worked on the prototype Nursing Ph.D. online course with a GIS component for Dr. M.E. Jones. She won the first annual UTA Libraries Learning Partnership Award, presented jointly to Hough and Dr. Hegstad. Each recipient received a plaque and a $500 stipend. Barbara Howser received the annual STAR Award, presented to a library staff member who has had outstanding years of service and made substantial contributions to the library. The award is underwritten by the Friends and receives a cash prize of $350. Ann Kelley taught "Spanish for Health Professionals" out of the Office of Continuing Education in the summer of 2002. Tom Lindsey was Chair of the North Texas Document Librarian Group in 2001-2002. Jason Neal and Diane Jenkins were selected to attend the "Summer Workshop for Distance Learning Librarians." This is part of Project LEAD (Librarians Entering a New Dimension), which is funded by a two-year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This was held at The University Center (North Harris Montgomery Community College District) near Houston from 22-26 July. Antoinette Nelson served as a Steering Committee Member of UTA’s Women’s Studies Program, "Expanding Your Horizons" annual workshop. Wrote the article, What and Where is SEL? In UTA Library Notes, Spring 2002 issue. Presented a poster session Taking UTA’s Science & Engineering Library to the World: A New Manager’s Perspective, at the Texas Library Association’s Annual Conference in Dallas. Margaret Oerter curated several exhibits in AFA: In 2000/2001 she designed "The Organ and Architecture" and "Tin Pan Alley and the Sheet Music" (one exhibit a semester). For fall 2002 she displayed a double exhibit "Dr. Elizabeth Morrow and her cello class" and "Cello in art." In April 2002 she completed the searchable data base for the UTA Concert Recordings by designing a data base and entering all concerts performed in the Irons Recital Hall in the Music Dept. from 1965 to present. The database is available at http://libararies.uta.edu/concerts. Shirley Rodnitzky wrote “Seek and Ye Shall Find an Aid” for the Compass Rose (Spring and Fall 2002). Sue Sappington is Chair of the TLA College and University Libraries Division (CULD) Scholarship Committee. Gerald Saxon serves on the Executive Board of the Texas Oral History Association, and in the spring of 2002 was elected vice president of the association. He also chairs the Archives Committee of the Texas State Historical Association. In 2002 Saxon and Ann Hodges of Special Collections presented a half-day pre-conference workshop for the Society of Southwest Archivists in Flagstaff, Arizona, on Fundraising for Archivists. Also in 2002 Saxon co-authored with James Bryan a chapter titled “Manifest Destiny and the Golden Land” for an upcoming book to be published by the Book Club of California about the mapping of California. Saxon also is co-editor with William Taylor of the University of California, Berkeley, of an annotated edition of George Wilkins Kendall’s Texan Santa Fe Expedition, forthcoming from the Library of Texas series in 2003. He is currently working on a biography of Jenkins Garrett and a book titled Historic Texas from the Air. Jean Sherwin serves on the Board of Directors, Benbrook Public Library. In Spring 2002 she won the annual STAR Award, presented to a library staff member who has had outstanding years of service and made substantial contributions to the library. Gary Spurr received certification in the Academy of Certified Archivists. and gave a presentation, “Maps of Conquest: Indian and Spanish Maps of Mesoamerica”, at the Texas Map Society’s Spring 2002 meeting. Mitch Stepanovich serves as advisor for Alpha Phi Omega and completed the Digital Society Certificate. Bobbie Stevens Johnson had a chapter published in Professor Charles Funkhouser's book, Education in Texas. The title of her chapter was "Education Since the Sixties." She also wrote an article published in Spring issue of Compass Rose. Jeffrey Stone (formerly Schnitzius) was enrolled in the Transatlantic History Ph.D. program. He was awarded a scholarship in the University of North Texas by the UNT History Department’s Faculty Endowment. He also teaches two American history courses at Tarrant County College and occasionally performs on classical guitar at staff receptions. Colin Toenjes taped a segment for the Arlington Community Cable show On Exhibit, talking about Special Collections and how to preserve photographs, and he also wrote the article, “Norman Alan Cohen Collection of Texas Postal Issues, Texas Sesquicentennial Series” for the Compass Rose (Fall 2002). Terry Wang served as advisor to the Vietnamese Student Association; is chair of the UT System Reference Subcommittee; Member, Advisory Committee, Recruit of UT System Digital Reference Librarian; and was a presenter at the Digital Reference Institute, at TWU in June 2002. Jim Wellvang continues to serve as Trustee and Officer of Abbey Publications, Inc., a nonprofit corporation. Tom Wilding was elected to a seat on the American Library Association Council (2001-2004) ; served as program reviewer for ALA Committee on Accreditation; served on Steering Committee for Congress on Professional Education; served as a member of the ALA 2001 Conference Planning Team; chaired the Strategic Planning Implementation Committee for the ALA Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA); served as elected member of the Standing Committee of the Management and Marketing Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and as co-chair of its Discussion Group on Marketing Academic Libraries; served as adjunct faculty (academic libraries; library management) in the School of Library and Information Services at the Texas Woman’s University; served as a member of the Members Services Committee of Educause. Panelist for “Having It All: Family and Work,” at the Annual Conference of the American Library Association, June 2001; presented “External Partnerships,” a paper for the IFLA Section on University and Other General Research Libraries, August 2001 (paper subsequently published in Library Management, Vol. 23, nos. 4/5, 2002); served as closing summation speaker, "La formation et la recherché sur le marketing et la gestion de la qualité en bibliothèque/Education and research for marketing and quality management in libraries," an IFLA Satellite Meeting, Québec, August 2001 (paper included in conference proceedings). In addition to the above activities, in FY 2001-2002, Tom served as elected member of the Council of the American Library Association; chaired the ALA Presidential Task Force on the Status of Librarians and served as a member of the ALA Presidential Task Force for Better Salaries for Library Workers; served as a member of the Transition Team to Create an ALA/Allied Professional Association; chaired the ALA 2002 Conference Planning Team; served as a member of the Recognition of Achievement Committee for the ALA Library Administration and Management Association; served as elected member of the Standing Committee of the Management and Marketing Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and as its Information Officer. With Li-Chih Fan of the Office of Information Technology, Tom presented “Library/IT Collaborative: A Joint Venture of the Office of Information Technology and the UTA Libraries," a poster session at the 2001 Educause Conference. With Sarah Jones of the UTA Libraries, Tom presented "The Impact of Change on Staff in Academic Libraries," at the International Federation of Library Associations Conference, Glasgow, Scotland, August 2002. Tommie Wingfield for the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, chaired the TexShare Electronic Information Working Group, 2001-2003. She also served as a TexShare Advisory Board.
