Staff Accomplishments, 1998-1999

Julie Alexander published "Highlights of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) Collection Management and Development Section (CMDS) Collection Management I ssues for Offsite Storage Discussion Group," Library Acquisitions: Practice and Theory, Vol. 23, Winter 1999.

Laura Blessing chaired the Diversity Officers' Discussion Group in January 1999 for the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). She is also an appointed member of the LAMA membership committee.

Carleen Dolan was elected alternates of the UTA Staff Advisory Council.

Maggie Dwyer finished her Master's Degree in English at UTA in May 1999.

Jill Emery was chair of the serials round table of the Texas Library Association (TLA) and she wrote an overview of the workshop: "Dear Abby/Dear Abbott- Return Performance" for the North American Serials Interest Group Newsletter. She wrote an overview of the preconference session: "Scenario Building: Creating Your Library's Future" for Serials Librarian, Special Issue: 14th Annual Conference Proceedings, North American Serials Interest Group, and compiled and disseminated the Texas Library Association-Serials Round Table Newsletter for 1999.

Sally Gross presented a paper entitled "Fire Insurance Maps and the Tales They Tell" at the Texas State Historical Association annual meeting.

Ann Hodges served as editor of Descriptive Notes, the newsletter of the Descriptive Section of the Society of American Archivists.

Ramona Holmes finished her masters degree in Information Science from the University of North Texas in December of 1999. She also was a delegate to the ALA's "Congress on Professional Education" in April 1999 in Washington, D.C.

Helen Hough is UTA's nursing librarian.

Karen Hopkins moderated the business meeting of the District Seven TLA meeting in Colleyville, and she co-chaired the exhibits committee at the Dallas TLA conference in April 1999.

Helen Hough team taught with the UTA nursing faculty the "Nursing Infomatics" course for graduates students and undergraduates.

Laura Marginson finished her B.A. in English at UTA in December 1999. She volunteers in the library at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Grapevine, TX, where she reviews books for the school and trains volunteers.

Margaret Oerter designed and installed an exhibit in the Architecture and Fine Arts library focusing on Dr. Linton Powell of UTA's music faculty.

Kay Punneo was elected to the UTA Staff Advisory Council and on the Staff Advisory Council Development Committee.

Shirley Rodnitzky's book Jazz Age Boomtown, written with her husband Jerry, missed mention in the Libraries' annual report last year.

Bob Samson presented a technical session at the regional Voyager Users group meeting in Ardmore, Oklahoma in October, 1998.

Gerald Saxon, with Dennis Reinhartz of the History Department, edited the book The Mapping of the Entradas into the Greater Southwest (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1998); presented a paper "Henry Washington Benham: A U.S. Army Engineer During the Mexican War" for the First Biennial Virginia Garrett Lectures on the History of Cartography; and reviewed two books for the Oral History Review. He was elected to the Executive Board of the Texas Oral History Association and serves on the Executive Board of the Book Club of Texas; Executive Board of the Tarrant County Historical Association; Chair, Archives Committee, the Texas State Historical Association.

Jean Sherwin was elected to the newly formed Board of Trustees of the District Library, Benbrook, Texas, where they are building a new library. She is also chair of the Site Advisory Committee to find a building site. Michael Stapleton co-presented (with Bob Samson) a session at the South Central Voyager User's Group meeting in October, 1999. The session was called "Introduction to voyager Systems Administration."

Tom Wilding served on UTA's Strategic Planning Committee; served on the search committee for the Director of Libraries at UT Dallas; served as Secretary to the UT System Advisory Committee on Libraries, and served as faculty advisor to the Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Association for UTA students. He was elected to Board of Trustees of Amigos Library Services; served as a member of the Educause Member Services Committee; was Guest Lecturer for Texas Woman's University School of Library and Information Sciences; and served as a chair of the Board of Advisors for the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Services. He served as President of the Library Administration and Management Association of the American Library Association, and chaired its Strategic Planning Task Force. If that wasn't enough, he also chaired the ALA Web Links Task Force and served as a member of the 2001 ALA Conference Planning Team; served as a delegate to the Congress on Professional Education; and served as an elected member of the Standing Committee on Management and Marketing of the International Federation of Library Associations.

Tommie Wingfield chaired the TexShare Electronic Information Working group, chaired the ALA Library and Information Technology Association section, and was vice chair of the Special Interest Group for Distance Education.
