From the Director

By Tom WildingTom Wilding, Director of Libraries

As we end the Spring 2000 semester and enter the summer months, we begin to close down one budget year and look forward to the next. The financial difficulties that plagued the University and the Libraries in the early 1990s seem remote today. In the past few years the Libraries have been able gradually to rebuild and stabilize the book and journal budgets, to add numerous electronic databases, to build a strong digital collection of full text journals and books, and to increase significantly the numbers of computer workstations available to users in the Libraries. We have even been able to add a few critical staff positions.

Looking ahead to the new year (which at the University begins on September 1), we anticipate another strong year for library resources and services. We anticipate not only holding the line on journal subscriptions but being able to add new titles for the first time in seven or eight years without having to cancel other titles. We expect to add about 20% to the budget for books. We expect to continue the growth of electronic resources and to take important steps in building a digital library.

Over the last several months, we have been developing a new strategic plan, one that we hope will ground us firmly in the emerging electronic environment, able to support a full set of resources and services to users wherever they are and whenever they need to use them. The financial picture for next year is encouraging to us as it appears that we will be able to take important first steps toward making these plans become a reality. There are exciting times ahead!
