Welcome Week Info Fair

Central Library Offers Freebies and Food: Quest for Library Gold

As part of Welcome Week, UT Arlington Library invites students to learn more about library resources and services on Tuesday, August 29, 2006, between 11am and 1pm.

The library’s Information Fair showcases services like the Digital Media Studio, Sam’s Click Café and Geographic Information Systems. Also highlighted are the libraries’ noteworthy holdings, including the extensive electronic resources, popular reading collection, and Texas history collection. Librarians and staff of the libraries will be available to answer students’ questions and demonstrate the services available throughout Central Library and the various branches.

Note: This edition of News You Can Use is part two of two newsletters describing events in the Library this fall semester. Be sure to visit the August 13, 2006 html edition for the rest of the story. This links to the PDF of that issue.

Students will want to keep their eyes open for the "Amnesty Card" handout--it’s a one-of-a-kind treasure this year. It grants the bearer of the card one-time forgiveness of up to $5.00 in library overdue fines. The CATCH is that the item must be presented with the card. They are valid until December 1, 2006.

There will be a variety of activities as well as opportunities to enter drawings for prizes. After discovering the answers to six basic questions at the Central Library, students are eligible for free food in the library’s basement.

For more information, contact Mary Jo Lyons, Program Coordinator for Information Literacy, at mjhandke@uta.edu  or 817-272-7520.

UT Arlington Conversations

UT Arlington Conversations is designed to extend the benefits of the freshman common reading program to the entire UTA community. A theme or issue drawn from each year’s OneBook selection will provide the focus for various “conversations”: events and activities (for example, panel discussions, lectures, art exhibits, film series), discussion groups and book clubs, and informal discussions with students and colleagues. These conversations, cutting across the boundaries of departments and colleges, faculty, students, and staff, will serve to unite the University and enrich the intellectual life of its members.

Focus on Faculty

September 27, 2006
Noon to 1:30pm, E. H. Hereford University Center, Bluebonnet Ballroom
UT Arlington President James Spaniolo will offer the first talk in the 2006-2007 Focus on Faculty lecture series. This talk will be held in the University Center Bluebonnet Ballroom from noon to 1:30pm. President Spaniolo's topic will be "The Power of Ideas".
Living in a time that’s unlike any other - and is still changing rapidly - the power of ideas, higher-order thinking, and open-minded tolerance have never been more important. James. D. Spaniolo, president of The University of Texas at Arlington, will discuss the power that’s inherent in understanding ideas that are different from, and perhaps contrary to, your own. When one looks at the world through a different set of lenses, what new frameworks will guide his or her understanding? How can higher education serve as the great equalizer and help us see beyond our own personal values and experiences?
Focus on Faculty is a speakers’ series, sponsored by the UT Arlington Library to highlight the work of UT Arlington faculty. It began in 2002-2003 as a way to provide a forum for outstanding faculty to share their research and achievements with students, faculty and staff on this campus and with the citizens of Arlington. The speakers who are invited have received major awards for research, teaching or service. These events are free and open to the public.
Refreshments will be served. Soft drinks provided by Coca Cola. For more information, contact Tommie Wingfield at wingfield@uta.edu or 817-272-2658.

New Library Circulation Policy Announced

UT Arlington Library is putting in place a new circulation policy for books, starting in Fall 2006. The faculty and teaching staff lending period has increased to one academic year. The graduate student loan period is now one full semester. The loan period for undergraduates and staff has increased to four weeks. Patron initiated holds and recalls have been activated for ease of patron use. For more information contact Heather Scalf, Assistant Coordinator for Access Services, at scalf@uta.edu or 817-272-7436.

Each month the librarians at Central library are setting up a small display to highlight interesting and sometimes unusual databases. These can be found on the second floor of the Central Library. The September displays are:

Literature Resource Center
This all-inclusive database contains information on both classical and contemporary authors and their works. Obtain biographies of authors, bibliographies of all they have written, critical essays and contextual information. Search by the author's name, the title of the work, or by the title of the periodical or journal that is part of the database.

Naxos Music Library
Naxos Music Library is the most comprehensive collection of classical music available online. It includes the complete Naxos and Marco Polo catalogues of over 150,000 tracks, including Classical music, Jazz, World, Folk and Chinese music. Whilst listening, you can read notes on the works being played as well as biographical information on composers or artists in Naxos's extensive database.
