Search Tip: "Cited Reference" Searches

Do you want to see how often a paper or an author has been cited in subsequent papers? The following databases have capabilities that allow you to find this information:

• Science Citation Index Expanded: After selecting Web of Science from the dropdown menu on the homepage, click the Cited Reference Search button. This allows you to search for citations by author name, and to see how often their papers have been cited. You can also narrow your search further by including a the name of a publication that contains papers by the author, as well as a range of years.
   
• ScienceDirect: After doing a search, click Abstract or SummaryPlus under the citation. In the abstract or summary, click Cited by in the upper right side of the screen.
   
• IEEE Xplore: After doing a search, click AbstractPlus under the appropriate citation. After going into the abstract, look for a list of Citing Documents at the very bottom of the screen.

Keep in mind that these capabilities are still rather limited. Very few databases currently have a "cited reference" feature. Also, since nothing currently exists to facilitate such searches across databases, you will need to search in each of the databases listed above.
