IEEE ANNOUNCES FREE ONLINE TRAINING SESSIONS FOR RESEARCHERS IN FOUR KEY TECHNOLOGIES

Technology-Specific Training Scheduled for Fall 2003

This month, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will begin offering free, technology-specific online training to users of IEEE technical content, including IEEE journals, magazines and conference proceedings. Each of these courses will focus on competitive intelligence and the use of IEEE technical content in the creation of intellectual property, including patents, for specific technologies within the scope of electrical engineering and computer science.  These free online sessions are oriented to executives, engineers, researchers and designers in these technologies. Each course will be offered twice to accommodate attendees in different time zones. Sessions take one hour, will be held at both 10 AM or 7 PM EDT, and require access to a phone line and high-speed Internet connection.

Sessions are scheduled for professionals in the following four technologies:

Semiconductors 30 September

Aerospace and Defense 28 October

Biomedical Engineering 29 October

Information Technology 18 November

Advance registration is required, and space is limited. For questions, or to sign up, please email training@ieee.org. Include your name, affiliation, title, and preferred session and time.

About the IEEE

The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society with more than 380,000 members in approximately 150 countries. Through its members, the IEEE is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace, computers and telecommunications to biomedicine, electric power and consumer electronics. The IEEE produces 30 percent of the world's literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields, and has developed more than 900 active industry standards. The organization also sponsors or cosponsors more than 300 international technical conferences each year. Additional information is available at www.ieee.org.

Congratulations:

"Students in various engineering disciplines will form teams Nov.12-14 in a challenge to find solutions to real-world problems in aircraft design and manufacturing. The challenge, presented by engineers from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, will involve almost 400 students in the UTA College of Engineering. Student teams will have about 45 minutes to evaluate a problem and develop a solution. Each team will then present their solution for review and judging by their peers, followed by Lockheed Martin engineers who will tell how they solved the problem. This is the fourth year that Lockheed Martin has challenged students at UTA."    [UTA Today 11/12/03]

The Wilbur & Orville Wright Papers at the Library of Congress
The online presentation of The Wilbur and Orville Wright Papers at the Library of Congress, comprising about 10,121 library items or approximately 49,084 digital images, documents the lives of Wilbur and Orville Wright and highlights their pioneering work which led to the world's first powered, controlled and sustained flight. Included in the collection are correspondence, diaries and notebooks, scrapbooks, drawings, printed matter, and other documents, as well as the Wrights' collection of glass-plate photographic negatives. The Wright Brothers' letters to aviation pioneer and mentor Octave Chanute, from the Octave Chanute Papers, were also selected for this online collection. The Wright Papers span the years 1881 to 1952 but largely cover 1900 to 1940. This online presentation includes the famous glass-plate negative of the "First Flight" at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903, as well as diaries and letters in which Wilbur and Orville Wright recount their work that led to that day.
