Teleconference -  Cheating and Plagiarism Using the Internet

Sponsored by UTA Center for Distance Education and UTA Libraries

When:  Thursday, April 3, 2003      Time:  1:30-3pm        Where:  College of Business, Rm. 154

Central Library News:

-GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Librarian:  Joshua Been -

Josh is dedicated to empowering all academic departments on campus to increase the accuracy and flexibility of their research using GIS. He seeks to do this in three ways. First, the library will serve as a data repository for spatial and attribute data sets so that students and faculty from all disciplines will have easy and centralized access. Second, Josh will serve as a tutor for those students currently enrolled in a course utilizing GIS. Third, he will work closely with faculty and students who are not as familiar with GIS to increase its use in the classroom and in research. This will be accomplished through workshops, class presentations, and consultation services.

Before taking on this position at UTA, he worked as the government information librarian at Texas A&M International University, an information specialist at Galaxy.com, and political science librarian at the U.S. Military Academy.  It was during his tenure at Texas A&M International University where Josh's passion for GIS led to his current position. In the spring of 2002, he co-taught a graduate-level Sociology course, entitled 'Using GIS to Examine the Social Organization of The Mexican-American Family in Social Structural Context on the Border.' Recent workshops/presentations held by Josh include: Accessing Census 2000, Mapping Government Data Using ArcView GIS, Obtaining Summer Government Internships, Federal and State Laws, and a series of joint workshops with the City of Laredo focusing on grants and statistics research.

-GIS Workshop Series - Central Library, Room 510

These are free and open to every faculty, staff, and student. An entire GIS project will be completed by the participants of the workshop. The only prerequisite is a basic comfort level working with computers in a PC environment.

BioOne CHEMnetBASE ENGnetBase Current Index to Statistics Extended Database (CIS-ED)

BioOne

A current collection of over 50 online, full-text journals in the subject areas of biology, ecology and environmental sciences.  Most are peer-reviewed serial publications of smaller scientific societies with coverage beginning in 2000. Journals are searchable as a group or by individual titles.  Full-text articles are available in PDF and can be viewed using the Adobe Acrobat® Reader.

CHEMnetBASE:

Chapman & Hall/CRC chemistry handbooks: Handbook of Chemistry & Physics, Combined Chemical Dictionary (CCD) (Dictionary of Commonly Cited Compounds, Dictionary of Drugs [formerly Pharmasource], Dictionary of Inorganic and Organometallic Compounds, Dictionary of Natural Products, Dictionary of Organic Compounds), Polymers: A Property Database, and Properties of Organic Compounds. All books can be searched for specific terms, or handbooks can be read individually using the Adobe Acrobat® Reader.

Current Index to Statistics - Extended Database (CIS-ED):

1975- to present. Some pre-1975 coverage for some titles. Updated as new information is received. The CIS-ED is a bibliographic index to publications in statistics and related fields. References are drawn from 1,300+ journals (174,000+ articles in journals), proceedings and edited books (42,000+ articles) and other sources. The database contains the cumulative contents of the CIS print volumes ending with v. 25, 1999. Core journals include: Journal of Applied Statistics, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series A-D, Statistica Nerlandica, Sociological Methods and Research, Statistics in Medicine, Probability in the Engineering and Information Sciences, and many more. This database is a joint venture of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
