A Finding Aid is a detailed guide compiled specifically to describe the arrangement and contents of a collection and to comment on its research potential. It serves the researcher seeking information about a person, family, or corporate body. The standard Finding Aid includes a biographical or historical sketch, a scope and content note, a provenance statement, restrictions on use, and a container list. The container list generally describes the collection by the folder, or the box. The detail of the description depends on the volume of expected use and, or the importance of the materials.
The Special Collections Division is committed to placing Finding Aids for the division's manuscript holdings on the Web. The list below is the beginning of this process. In addition, the division maintains in print format hundreds of Finding Aids to collections. Please contact the Reference Desk at Special Collections for information concerning a specific collection.
The list below is divided by collection division, including Historical Cartographic

History Collection, Historical Photographs Collection, and University Archives. Underlined
titles are links to those Finding Aids currently available online. Other titles represent
collections whose online Finding Aids are in process and will shortly be available online.
Many of the Finding Aids will print out at twenty or more pages. Be patient, the files are
large and take a few minutes to load. For your convenience, items on the list marked with 
will have a link to a downloadable
file. Follow directions found at the top of the page of the specific Finding Aid.
New! The Special Collections Division has published A Guide to Archives and Manuscript Collections in the Special Collections Division at The University of Texas at Arlington Libraries (Arlington, Texas: UTA, 2000). An electronic version of the Guide is available on line. The Guide includes a detailed listing of all archival, manuscript, and photographic collections held in the division. The Guide includes a comprehensive index. However, currently the index is marked only for the paper copy. Entries in the electronic version are being linked daily and should be completed shortly.
