Founding Member Wins Award

Doorway of Biblioteca MathesOn October 1st, founding member Dr. W. Michael Mathes, an historian of colonial Mexico, became the 2000 Sir Thomas More Medallist at a California symposium celebrating 150 years of statehood and the sesquicentennial of the California Gold Rush at the Gleeson Library of the University of San Francisco. This award is presented by the Gleeson Library Associates to individuals engaged in "private collecting for public benefit." Dr. Mathes was honored for donating his extensive personal research library on the history of colonial Mexico to El Colegio de Jalisco, Zapopan. Mathes’ gift will be housed along with other volumes in the newly built Biblioteca Mathes.

Texas Map Society founding members Jenkins and Virginia Garrett were honored as the 1998 Sir Thomas More Medallists for their extensive donations to The University of Texas at Arlington Libraries.
