Cruising and Touring along Buffalo Bayou The Spring Meeting of the Texas Map Society (TMS) will be held on April 4 – 5, 2008, at the San Jacinto Monument on the grounds of the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. Located about 22 miles east of downtown Houston in La Porte, the historic battleground is owned by the State of Texas and managed as a state park by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). The San Jacinto Monument is also owned by TPWD, but is under the care, custody and control of the San Jacinto Museum of History, a non-profit organization. The site offers our members a unique experience for special tours and exhibits. Working with the Friends of the San Jacinto Battleground, the San Jacinto Museum of History, TPWD, and the Port of Houston Authority, the Program Committee has put together a group of outstanding speakers and selected exciting events focusing on the region. Speakers will cover such topics as historic maps of the April 21, 1836 battle of San Jacinto, the Gulf Coast, subsurface natural resources, and historical Texas maps owned by the San Jacinto Museum. Events begin Friday evening with a sunset cruise along the Houston Ship Channel and Turning Basin and continue on Saturday with programs in the theater at the San Jacinto Monument, a guided bus tour of San Jacinto Battleground, and lunch at a landmark restaurant. In addition, we will have the opportunity to view the San Jacinto Museum’s spring exhibition devoted to historical maps and take a private peek into the Museum’s Herzstein Library. We will close with a reception honoring our speakers and meeting partners at the home of one of our favorite Houston members, Jim and Betty Key. Meeting Registration Deadline: March 26, 2008 Hotel Registration Deadline: March 21, 2008 12:00 a.m.
