Affordable Housing and Homelessness

Selected Research Resources

The University of Texas at Arlington Bibliography Series

John Dillard, Social Sciences Librarian,
dillard@uta.edu

Below is a selected list of articles, books, book chapters, dissertations, videos, and other materials that might be of interest to researchers looking for information about the related social problems of the lack of affordable housing and homelessness. Some researchers believe that the "Lack of affordable housing leads the list of causes of homelessness..." (page 5 of the Hunger and Homelessness Survey of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2005). Much of the material listed here is either owned by or accessible via the UT Arlington Library and more than half of the items listed below are available full-text online to UT Arlington students and faculty.

Articles & Chapters - - Books - - Digital Dissertations - - Videos - - Websites

The articles and books are so numerous that these two sections are further subdivided by three broad subject areas:
Community Development; International Perspectives; and Policies & Planning.

The items within each of the sections and subsections are listed in alpha order by title.

Academic Articles and Book Chapters

A many of the articles and book chapters in this section require the Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing and printing. The digital items in this section are available for UT Arlington faculty and students by simply clicking on the links under each article citation.
[Students and faculty at colleges and universities other that UT Arlington may need to copy the link into a new browser window to access the articles in the online collections (JSTOR and others) through their own university or college library's subscription.]

The Impact of Zoning on Housing Affordability.
This discussion paper written by Edward L. Glaeser and Joseph Gyourko, and published by the Harvard Institute of Economic Research (HIER), asks the question, "Does America face an affordable housing crisis and, if so, why?" Glaeser and Gyourko's paper "argues that in much of America the price of housing is quite close to the marginal, physical costs of new construction. The price of housing is significantly higher than construction costs only in a limited number of areas, such as California and some eastern cities. In those areas, we argue that high prices have little to do with conventional models with a free market for land. Instead, our evidence suggests that zoning and other land use controls play the dominant role in making housing expensive." This discussion paper (# 1948) was published in March 2002.
