Princeton, NJ: Films for the Humanities and Sciences, ©2007, 2004.
1 DVD Videodisc, 60 minutes, sound and color.
A critical question continues to haunt America's national psyche: how could the most powerful nation on earth have been so utterly unprepared to protect its homeland from the September 11th hijackers? First broadcast in 2004, this program offers a special one-hour analysis of the 9/11 Commission Report-connecting the dots of what happened that infamous day and studying the warning signs that could have averted the tragedy. The program highlights the agonizing close calls, missteps, and outright failures of two successive administrations and America's intelligence and security agencies in the months and years leading up to 9/11. A new Bill Moyers essay, reflecting on the nation's mood in 2007, opens the program.

The 51st State: America's Working Poor.
Princeton, NJ: Films for the Humanities & Sciences, 2007.
1 DVD Videodisc, 57 minutes, sound and color.
"While poverty has traditionally been a problem only for the unemployed, a new demographic of Americans has emerged--the working poor. This program explores the disturbing realities that many people in low-wage jobs face every day--such as having to decide whether to pay the rent, buy groceries, or see a doctor. Viewers will learn how standards of living are often measured, how suburban areas have fostered a particular type of economic hardship, and how welfare-to-work programs have, at times, led to more resistant poverty. The film also draws connections between America's immigration challenges and the swelling numbers of working poor."--Container notes.

Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy.
Washington, DC: American Psychological Association, ©2007.
1 DVD Videodisc, 100 minutes, sound and color.
"In Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Dr. Diana Fosha demonstrates her healing-centered treatment approach, which aims to capitalize on the client's natural, adaptive, wired-in capacities for healing and transformation. AEDP integrates experiential and relational elements within an affect-centered psychodynamic framework, with the somatic experience of affect in relationship and the moment-to-moment regulation of this experience as the focus of clinical aims to bring about change. In this session, Dr. Fosha works with a young woman who comes to treatment for help with an unsatisfying marriage. The client is worried that her 3-year-old daughter is being harmed by watching the conflict between the parents. Working to rapidly overcome the client's defenses and fear of emotional closeness, Dr. Fosha helps the client experience and process her deep grief, hurt, and sadness over her own early experiences of being parented. The client experiences a healing transformation and thus accesses confidence in herself and in her own resources."--Container.

Addicted to Cheap Shopping?
Princeton, NJ: Films Media Group, 2007.
1 DVD Videodisc, 60 minutes, sound and color.
"In this program host Libby Potter travels around the world as she takes a meaningful look at the economics behind the inexpensive goods for sale in big-box stores and malls. Cost-cutting through supply chain management and waste reduction, economies of scale achieved by shipping offshore-manufactured goods to market via super-container ships, the Wal-Mart effect, and the no-frills philosophy of IKEA are addressed. The triumphs and woes of China, in its role as a manufacturer for the world, is given special attention, and the clothing industry is presented as a case study of the cheap goods cycle. But the program also considers the hidden societal costs of cheap goods, such as sweatshop labor and the environmental impact of cavalier overconsumption, and questions how much longer prices will continue to drop as China's standard of living rises"-- Films for the Humanities & Sciences web site.

Big Bucks, Big Pharma: Marketing Disease & Pushing Drugs.
Northampton, MA: Media Education Foundation, 2006.
1 DVD Videodisc, 46 minutes, sound, color.
Big Bucks, Big Pharma pulls back the curtain on the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry to expose the insidious ways that illness is used, manipulated, and in some instances created, for capital gain. Focusing on the industry's marketing practices, media scholars and health professionals help viewers understand the ways in which direct-to-consumer (DTC) pharmaceutical advertising glamorizes and normalizes the use of prescription medication, and works in tandem with promotion to doctors. Combined, these industry practices shape how both patients and doctors understand and relate to disease and treatment. Ultimately, Big Bucks, Big Pharma challenges us to ask important questions about the consequences of relying on a for-profit industry for our health and well-being. Black Is, Black Ain't: A Personal Journey through Black Identity
San Francisco, CA : California Newsreel, ©2004; 1995.
1 videodisc, 86 minutes, sound, color with black and white sequences, and 1 facilitator's guide(15 p. ; 21 cm.).
American culture has stereotyped black Americans for centuries. Equally devastating, the late Marlon Riggs argued, have been the definitions of "blackness" African Americans impose upon one another which contain and reduce the black experience. In this film, Riggs meets a cross-section of African Americans grappling with the paradox of numerous, often contradictory definitions of blackness. He shows many who have felt uncomfortable within the race because their complexion, class, sexuality, gender, or speech has rendered them "not black enough," or conversely, "too black." The film scrutinizes the identification of "blackness" with masculinity as well as sexism, patriarchy and homophobia in black America.

Buying the War.

"The Bush administration marketed and sold the war in Iraq to the American people. How and why did the press buy it, and what does that say about the role of journalists in helping the public sort out fact from propaganda? In this program, veteran journalist Bill Moyers, award-winning producer Kathleen Hughes, and their investigative team piece together the reporting and political spin that shaped the public mind prior to, during, and following the 2003 invasion. Exposing the disappearance of a watchdog mentality in mainstream newspaper and TV journalism, the documentary also highlights the work of intrepid Knight Ridder reporters who dug beneath the surface of administration claims, only to be drowned out by the drums of war. Further insight comes from journalists Dan Rather, former anchor of CBS evening news; Tim Russert of NBC's Meet the press; Bob Simon of 60 minutes; and Walter Isaacson, former chairman of CNN."--Publisher's information.

The Interventionists: Chronicles of a Mental Health Crisis Team.
Montreal, Canada: NFB, 2006.
1 DVD Videodisc, 32 minutes, sound and color.
"A unique crisis team works their cases in downtown Toronto. Ellen is a mental health nurse. Brandon is a specially trained police officer. Together, they ride the streets of the inner city in an unmarked police vehicle, responding to 911 calls involving what are officially labelled 'emotionally disturbed persons' -- 'threatened suicides', 'bizarre behavior' or 'person gone berserk.' Situations can be highly charged and unpredictable but in most cases, with time, patience and expertise, they peel away at the labels, and de-escalate the situation by providing referrals, services and resources within the community, avoiding hospitalization and jail."--Publisher's information.

Killing Us Softly 4: Advertising's Image of Women.
Northampton, MA: Media Education Foundation, ©2010.
1 DVD Videodisc (45 minutes, sound, color.
"In this new, highly anticipated update of her pioneering Killing Us Softly series, the first in more than a decade, Jean Kilbourne takes a fresh look at how advertising traffics in distorted and destructive ideals of femininity. The film marshals a range of new print and television advertisements to lay bare a stunning pattern of damaging gender stereotypes -- images and messages that too often reinforce unrealistic, and unhealthy, perceptions of beauty, perfection, and sexuality. By bringing Kilbourne's groundbreaking analysis up to date, Killing us softly 4 stands to challenge a new generation of students to take advertising seriously, and to think critically about popular culture and its relationship to sexism, eating disorders, and gender violence" (Container).

Margaret Sanger.
Princeton, NJ: Films for the Humanities & Sciences, 2003; ©1998.
1 DVD Videodisc, 87 minutes, sound, color, with some black and white sequences.
"Birth control advocate, self-styled libertarian, and ardent proponent of women's rights--Margaret Sanger was all of these, as this balanced, probing documentary attests. Using rare archival footage, diary excerpts, and commentary from historians, critics, and relatives, the program traces Sanger's extraordinary life and exhaustive work in the promotion and legalization of contraception. The documentary examines Sanger's legal battles, her work to distribute scientific birth control information, and her best-known achievement: the establishment of Planned Parenthood. Grandson Alexander Sanger--himself a birth control activist--offers insight into her Bohemian life as well as the fierce opposition she faced from conservative religious and social groups. Margaret Sanger is seen in both triumph and failure. At the start of her career, she opened the first birth control clinic in the United States. She finished her work a half-century later after launching the research that led to the birth control pill. But her darker side--her use of the racist and elitist arguments of eugenics--haunts her memory to this day."

Tough Guise 2: Violence, Manhood & American Culture.
Northampton, MA: Media Education Foundation, 2013.
1 DVD Videodisc, 78 minutes, sound, color.
In this highly anticipated update of the influential and widely acclaimed Tough Guise, pioneering anti-violence educator and cultural theorist Jackson Katz argues that the ongoing epidemic of men's violence in America is rooted in our inability as a society to move beyond outmoded ideals of manhood. In a sweeping analysis that cuts across racial, ethnic, and class lines, Katz examines mass shootings, day-to-day gun violence, violence against women, bullying, gay-bashing, and American militarism against the backdrop of a culture that has normalized violent and regressive forms of masculinity in the face of challenges to traditional male power and authority. Along the way, the film provides a stunning look at the violent, sexist, and homophobic messages boys and young men routinely receive from virtually every corner of the culture, from television, movies, video games, and advertising to pornography, the sports culture, and US political culture. Tough Guise 2 stands to empower a new generation of young men--and women--to challenge the myth that being a real man means putting up a false front and engaging in violent and self-destructive behavior.
