Accessibility Workshop – Building Accessible Word Documents

This workshop is Presented by UTA's Electronic and Information Resources Accessibility Coordinator, Laura Hopkins, MS ITM, CAPM, CPACC, CTCD/CTCM . 

Join a hands-on workshop led by Laura Hopkins, UTA’s accessibility coordinator, focused on making your Word documents accessible and adaptable across platforms. Developing accessible Word documents is essential for streamlining projects in Pressbooks, improving electronic theses and dissertation (ETD) submissions for graduate students, and sharing your work in a format that’s usable and inclusive for all. 

This two-hour session includes an hour of expert training followed by an hour of application time to practice techniques, from color contrast and alt text for images and formulas to accessible table creation, styles, and heading structures.

Join us for Beyond the Price Tag, an interactive student event where we’re diving into the real cost of textbooks and how Open Educational Resources (OER) can make a difference. Share your thoughts on textbook affordability by answering a quick, thought-provoking question—because your voice matters! 

 

Grant Information Session

Wednesday, 3/5/2025, 9:30am-10:00am, Virtual

Join us for a virtual information session to learn more about the UTA CARES Grant and prepare to submit an application. Since 2017, the UTA CARES Grant has funded more than 60 projects that contribute to course material affordability through the adoption of affordable resources and creation of unique open educational resources (OER). 

Faculty who are interested in transitioning their courses to no-cost or low-cost course materials may be eligible to receive funding in one of three categories: 

  • Adoption stipend – provides up to $800 for redesigning a course around existing low- or no-cost course materials (including OER, free resources, or library-purchased materials)
  • Modification grant – provides up to $5,000 to modify, combine, or localize existing OER to design and publish a tailored resource for UTA students
  • Creation grant – provides up to $10,000 to create and publish a unique OER 

Spring 2025 submissions are open now, and applications may be submitted at any time before the Friday, March 21 deadline.

OER Adoption Event 

Thursday, 3/6/2025, 11:30am-1:30pm, Foyer area/Community Commons in the Social Work building, Free Snacks

Join the Open Educational Resources and Digital Scholarship Department, UTA Libraries for an interactive, come-and-go event designed to help faculty and students explore, evaluate, and adopt Open Educational Resources (OER). In just 30-45 minutes, participants will browse featured OER, assess their adaptability, and explore customization options through hands-on stations—all while enjoying light refreshments and snacks. Whether adopting, adapting, or creating, this event provides a hands-on way to engage with open education at UTA. 

Stations Include: 

  • Explore & Adopt: Browse 10 featured OER across disciplines.
  • Evaluate & Modify: Assess accessibility and make real-time edits.
  • Find a Perfect Match: Search OER repositories with guidance.
  • Creation Station: Conceptualize new OER projects.
  • Check-Out & Advocacy: Learn about the Open Education Student Advocacy Group and next steps.
