James Langford was awarded a UTA CARES Adoption Stipend for his project, “Introduction to Social Work.” Langford, a professor of practice at the UTA School of Social Work, received the stipend to expand and revise open access materials and begin creation of an accompanying student workbook for SOCW 2361, Introduction to Social Work.

Langford and his colleagues will adapt existing social work curriculum to reflect course learning objectives and social work practice in Texas. Langford said, “Craig Keaton and I, along with Brooke Troutman, would like to make the Introduction to Social Work text materials both readily accessible, timely to the profession, and personalize it with UTA and local community interviews.”

The UTA CARES Grant Program, managed by UTA Libraries, helps educators adopt and create open educational resources (OER), which are free course materials that are licensed so others can revise and reuse the content. Langford’s project will save UTA students enrolled in the course approximately $3,500 in Fall 2020.
