Magruder Receives UTA CARES Adoption Stipend
Ms. Karen Magruder was awarded a UTA CARES Adoption Stipend for her project, “Creating Green Social Work Curriculum with OER.” Magruder, Assistant Professor in Practice in UTA’s School of Social Work, received the stipend to develop the course using materials that are free to access for UTA students by leveraging content from UTA Libraries’ collections.
The adoption project eliminated the need for students in the course to buy the commercial alternative, which Magruder said “costs an astounding $248.” Her decision to use free course materials allowed her to “walk the walk" of a social work professor invested in social and environmental justice by "addressing a serious equity issue- textbook affordability.” It also reduced the carbon footprint of the class by minimizing physical materials.
The UTA CARES Grant Program, managed by UTA Libraries, supports the use of course materials that are free of cost for UTA students. Magruder’s project saved UTA students enrolled in Green Social Work (SOCW 5392) approximately $3,500 in Spring 2020.
