Dr. Carter Tiernan was awarded a UTA CARES Adoption Stipend for her project, “OER for Introductory Programming Classes.” Tiernan, an Assistant Dean for UTA’s College of Engineering, received the stipend to integrate a suite of open resources into a programming course. The suite includes a textbook as well as videos and online materials.

The adoption project will eliminate the need for students to purchase an $84 e-book for the course and give them access to practice materials at no cost. Tiernan said that she decided use openly available teaching resources so that “students could have equal access even if they don’t have equal funding.”

The UTA CARES Grant Program, managed by UTA Libraries, supports the use of course materials that are free of cost for UTA students. Tiernan’s project will save UTA students enrolled in her section of Introduction to Computers and Programming (CSE 1310) approximately $17,541 in Fall 2020. She hopes that the resource suite can eventually be used in all sections of the course.
