If you’ve spent time in the FabLab’s Shop Room, you’ve probably crossed paths with Monik Patel. Patel is often found helping students troubleshoot their projects or guiding them through the tools to help them bring their ideas to life.

Monik’s path to UTA started long before he set foot in Texas. It began with research, conversations, and the trusted words of UTA alums who encouraged him to take the leap.

“UTA was on my shortlist when I came to the States,” Patel said. “I looked at the program, the faculty, the stats, and I also talked with alumni. Everyone pointed me here.”

Originally from the state of Gujarat in western India, Monik arrived ready to start his master’s degree, but like many international students, Patel faced the challenge of adjusting to a new culture.

“It was a bit difficult at first,” Patel said. “But once I started talking to students from here and from different countries, it got easier. People made me feel welcome.”

Finding His Place in the FabLab

When Patel applied to work in the Libraries, he didn’t expect to end up in a woodworking and metalworking space, especially as a computer science major. But he welcomed the challenge.

“When I started, I didn’t know much,” Patel said. “My supervisor, Joshua Richey, taught me everything from scratch. Now I feel proud that I can help others and teach them how to use the machines safely.”

His background, combined with a hands-on workshop course during his undergraduate studies, provided a helpful starting point. But the FabLab’s Shop Room introduced him to more advanced tools, new equipment, and a steady stream of creative projects.

“In the Shop Room, I help architecture students, engineering students, faculty, and anyone who needs the machines,” Patel explained. “I enjoy seeing what people create.”

Learning, Leading and Laughing Along the Way

One of the people who has made the biggest impact on Monik is Joshua Richey, the Shop Room Technician, who supervises him.

“Josh teaches me like a friend,” Patel said. “I want to take that trait from him, when I teach someone new, be a friend first, not bossy.”

Richey sees tremendous value in Monik’s growth over the past year.

“Monik has been great,” Josh said. “Any time I’m not around, he steps up. When he started, he didn’t know much about the Shop Room, but he’s picked things up quickly. He’s versatile on all the tools now.”

Richey also noted how much Monik’s confidence has flourished.

“When I first met him, he was shy,” Richey said. “Now he’s more outgoing and comfortable talking with learners. He’s gained mechanical skills, problem-solving skills, and a lot of communication skills.”

The Library as a Home Base

For Monik, the Libraries aren’t just where he works; they are where he studies, focuses and recharges.

“As a grad student, the quiet floors have helped me so much,” Patel said. “My roommate makes noise, so I come here for peace and full concentration. Back in India, my university didn’t have anything like this.”

He also appreciates the entire FabLab team.

“Lauren Stutler, Eric Olson, Josh, the whole staff is so helpful,” Patel said. “They’ve helped me become a better person.”

Looking Toward What’s Next

Patel is set to graduate in May 2026, and like many students nearing that milestone, feels both excited and a little nervous.

“The semesters have gone quickly,” Patel said. “It’s been a really good experience. Plans after graduation? Still figuring that out.”

Why Student Workers Matter

Patel’s story is a powerful reminder of the essential role student workers play in UTA Libraries. They bring their cultures, personalities, talents, and curiosity into our spaces and in return, the Libraries give them room to grow, to lead, and to build confidence that will stay with them long after graduation.

We’re proud of students like Monik Patel, and proud to play a role in helping them succeed, both academically and personally. Their journeys remind us why supporting students will always be at the heart of what we do.
