The rhythmic sounds of power tools, table saws, and welders signal creativity is in full swing at the FabLab's Shop Room in the UTA Central Library. This space is more than just a workshop; it's a hands-on learning environment where students can gain practical skills in woodworking and metalworking.

With each project, The Shop Room provides not only guidance and knowledge but also shows students the importance of using the right tool for the job.

"The Shop Room is a place where students can use woodworking and metalworking tools to help complete their academic or personal projects," said Joshua Richey, a FabLab Shop Room Technician. "When I was a student, The Shop Room helped me grow my knowledge of how to create different things."

Students go through safety training in The Shop Room.

The shop room is equipped with computer-aided manufacturing equipment for working with wood and metal. It also includes a band saw, bench grinder, CNC plasma cutter, table saw, and an array of power and hand tools to support students' projects.

The Shop Room ensures a safe and supportive learning environment for those new to woodworking or metalworking. Students are required to complete general shop safety training before progressing to equipment-specific training. Staff members guide them through the process, helping build their confidence and technical skills.

Workshops offered throughout the semester provide an excellent entry point for students looking to try their hand at learning a new skill. These sessions allow participants to create practical, take-home items like cutting boards or paper towel holders.

"We start with the cutting board workshop to get people interested in working with their hands. Most of our workshops are two or three days," Richey explained. "Most of our community here at UTA is living on campus, so we wanted to develop a project to create an item useful for their apartment or dorm."

Beyond beginner-friendly projects, students can take on more ambitious endeavors, including crafting furniture. Richey emphasized that smaller projects help students develop the foundational skills and confidence necessary to tackle larger creations.

Engaging in hands-on projects creates a sense of achievement, allowing students to refine existing skills or discover new talents.

As Richey has worked on personal projects or helped others, he's noticed its positive effect on people.

He noted that these projects help to build a person's confidence as they learn a new skill or sharpen existing ones. This confidence gives them success in The Shop Room, but it also helps them be successful in the classroom and as professionals after they leave UTA.

Encouraging students to explore their creativity and craftsmanship, Richey extends an open invitation to all.

"If you have a desire to make something, come by and talk to us. We will walk you through everything," he said. "Everyone is welcome, and we can help you with any project that you might have."
