What happens when you mix storytelling, strategy, and the unpredictable roll of the dice? You get UTA Libraries' latest adventure—Project Crit, a brand-new Dungeons & Dragons podcast that brings epic tales and unforgettable characters to life. Whether you're a seasoned Dungeon Master or just curious about the game, this is a journey you won't want to miss. Project Crit is set to launch during the Fall 2025 semester at the UTA Central Library.

"With this podcast, we want to make D&D more approachable," said Joseph Aguilar, Tabletop Lead in The Basement. "When students see people playing the game, we want it to be well-produced and professional. However, we still want it to feel like something where you can imagine yourself at that table, playing the game. A big goal of this podcast is the same as one of the core goals of D&D—telling a good story. That's something we want to achieve."

The Magic of Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop role-playing game that blends imagination, improvisation and teamwork. Players embark on collaborative storytelling adventures, guided by a Dungeon Master who weaves the narrative and oversees the game world. Whether battling mythical creatures, solving mysteries or forging alliances, every choice impacts the evolving story.

The game has seen a surge in popularity over the last decade, fueled by hit shows like "Critical Role," "Dimension 20," and "Stranger Things." According to The New York Times, more than 50 million people worldwide have engaged with D&D since its creation in the 1970s, with younger audiences embracing its immersive, interactive storytelling.

A Podcast for Gamers, By Gamers

Filming for Project Crit is anticipated to begin in June, with a trailer debuting in late August or early September on the UTA Libraries website. The show will feature eight weekly, two-hour episodes, offering viewers a front-row seat to an engaging and dynamic campaign.

Jess Williams, FabLab Coordinator with The Basement, emphasized the importance of casting students with a unique flair to the game.

"We had an incredible response from students applying for cast positions," Williams said. "For the cast, we were looking for people who are comfortable on camera, who thrive in improv settings, and who have a deep love for D&D. Most importantly, we wanted students who have a passion for sharing something they love. This podcast will showcase the tight-knit gaming community we've built in The Basement."

Showcasing UTA Libraries' Resources

Beyond bringing exciting adventures to life, Project Crit will also highlight the diverse resources available at UTA Libraries. The podcast will be filmed in one of The Basement's rooms, utilizing state-of-the-art recording equipment from The Studios and set pieces crafted in collaboration with the FabLab.

By integrating these elements, Project Crit entertains and educates students about the creative possibilities available at the Libraries. Whether through gaming, digital media or hands-on fabrication, UTA Libraries is a hub for exploration and storytelling.

So, are you ready to embark on an unforgettable journey? Gather your party, roll the dice and tune in this fall as Project Crit brings adventure, strategy and chaos to UTA Libraries.
