Helping students unlock their creativity as they learn new skills motivates Carissa Knitowski, FabLab Coordinator at the UTA Central Library. Knitowski, a proud Maverick alum, returned to the university after completing a Master of Fine Arts in Costume Technology from Ohio University.

"I like getting to share my knowledge with the students. Working in the FabLab is satisfying because you can see the spark in the students' eyes when they understand the task you are teaching them," Knitowski said. "To see that excitement from them, knowing that they can create whatever they want now with this new skill, is amazing."

As FabLab Coordinator, Carissa plays a key role in supporting and training student employees, developing documentation and programming, and keeping the space running smoothly. Whether stepping in to assist where needed or planning new workshops, her leadership helps keep the creative momentum strong across the FabLab.

Much of her time is spent in the textile area—a favorite space where students and makers can use sewing machines to repair clothing, construct new garments or simply try something new. For Knitowski, the ability to empower others through hands-on learning in textiles is especially meaningful.

"It is not a skill that people are learning anymore. A lot of high schools have gotten rid of home economics classes and because of that, people don't have a lot of opportunities to learn it," Knitowski said. "So, it is cool that we can share it with them now."

She noted that the chance to help others gain confidence through creativity inspires her.

Knitowski hopes to teach in higher education one day and sees her role at UTA Libraries as a valuable step toward that path.

"MFA is a terminal degree in the arts, so it opens doors to becoming a professor," she said. "I'm still weighing academia versus industry, but for now, I love being here and working with students."

Outside the FabLab, Knitowski is a proud Trekkie, a skilled cosplayer, and a dog mom to Sophie. She even makes her own hats using antique wooden blocks and traditional millinery techniques.

"I missed having a space like the FabLab when I was in grad school," she said. "Now I get to help others discover it, which makes this role so rewarding."

We’re proud to have Carissa on the UTA Libraries team. Her creativity, expertise, and passion for teaching help make our campus community stronger—and our students more successful.
