Staff Spotlight: Frank Zhang
For Frank Zhang, returning to work at a university feels like coming full circle. After years of working in the private sector, Zhang joined UTA Libraries in March as an IT Systems Configuration Programming Senior Analyst, also known as an Applications Administrator. In this role, he supports a wide range of applications on Linux and Windows systems and helps ensure that the Libraries' digital infrastructure runs smoothly.
Zhang's career began at the UNT Health Science Center in 1995, where he served as a systems and application administrator. After more than a decade there, he spent the next 18 years working for FedEx before deciding to return to a university setting—this time, at UTA.
"I always dreamed of working for a university again," Zhang said. "Working here makes me feel young. It reminds me of good memories. The energy on campus, especially from the students, is contagious."
The transition to UTA Libraries has been positive. Zhang said he's been impressed by his new colleagues' dedication.
"My co-workers work so hard. They're here early and they leave late. I'm amazed by their commitment," he said. "They also made sure I had everything I needed from the start—accounts, access, support. It helped me get up to speed quickly."
In his role, Zhang handles system installations, manages software applications, and addresses customization requests from Libraries staff and users. His experience and enthusiasm for technology make him a valuable asset to the Libraries' Learning Systems and Technology team.
Zhang's interest in computers goes back to high school. That early fascination turned into a career that has spanned decades.
"I've been doing this almost my whole life," he said. "It's what I know and what I enjoy."
Outside of work, Zhang leads an active and creative life. He enjoys jogging daily with his wife, though he notes his pace is "twice as fast," and plays pickleball every Tuesday. He also lifts weights, plays ping pong, and occasionally joins a fitness class.
But perhaps his most unexpected hobby is his love of music. Zhang is a bass in the Dallas Philharmonic Choir, a group he's been singing with for several years. He first discovered his love for singing in church choirs and now enjoys performing with professionals and fellow enthusiasts alike.
"Our director is a professional, and we even have vocal trainers," he said. "Last month, we performed with the McKinney Philharmonic Orchestra. I really enjoy those moments."
For Zhang, technology and music are ways to connect with others and bring structure and harmony to everyday life. Whether solving technical challenges or performing onstage, Zhang approaches each with dedication, heart, and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the community at UTA Libraries.
