Staff Spotlight: Gabriella Thomas
Gabriella Thomas understands the power of confidence. As a former Miss Arlington and contestant in the Miss Texas pageant, she knows what it means to step out of her comfort zone, believe in herself, and pursue a dream with purpose. Now, as a library specialist with UTA Libraries' Community Engagement department, Thomas is channeling that same energy to uplift the students, faculty, and staff she supports each evening at the Central Library.
"I had qualified to do a pageant when I was in the Virgin Islands and Antigua because my dad is from Antigua and Barbuda. But I ended up competing here in Texas. I had no experience with pageantry, but I did it confidently when I represented Arlington," Thomas said. "It was a very interesting experience because it got me out of my comfort zone. Competing was a new experience for me and the pageant girls were really nice. So, I might do it again next year."
Thomas joined the Libraries in April and quickly became a welcoming presence to everyone who walked through the doors in the evenings. Whether she's answering questions, assisting student workers, or simply offering a friendly face, her goal is clear: to serve and inspire.
"I always wanted to work in a library. Growing up, they had a program after school where you would help the teachers with things. I worked in the library and found the experience pretty rewarding. I was really excited when I got the job here," she said. I wake up happy and look forward to coming to work and serving this community."
Her enthusiasm reflects UTA Libraries' commitment to creating a people-first culture rooted in service and student success. With plans to enroll in classes at UTA, Thomas is already investing in her own academic journey—aiming to pursue studies that will help her better serve patrons and peers alike.
"I do plan on taking classes here at UTA. Classes that are beneficial not only to me but to people that I help here at the Libraries," Thomas said. "Right now, I am teaching myself Spanish."
Outside of her work, Thomas is a multifaceted creative with passions that include freelance graphic design and skydiving—an activity she hopes to return to soon. One of her long-term goals is to launch a local Miss Arlington pageant that offers scholarships to contestants, creating opportunities for others just as she's had.
As she continues settling into her role, Thomas expresses deep gratitude for the warm welcome she's received.
"Everyone has been so supportive since I started. It's made me feel right at home," she said.
Gabriella Thomas's story is one of self-confidence, service and forward momentum—a true reflection of UTA Libraries' mission to empower people, nurture community, and inspire the next generation of leaders.
Next time you visit Central Library in the evening, be sure to say hello to Gabriella Thomas—you just might meet someone who reminds you that confidence can open all kinds of doors.
