We're excited to introduce a new face to UTA Libraries—but not a new face to UTA! Please join us in welcoming John Hillas, our new Contracts and Events Coordinator.

With more than 20 years at UTA, John brings a wealth of institutional knowledge and an unwavering commitment to student success. For the past 18 years, he has served in various roles within Student Affairs—leading student programs, managing student government, organizing signature events like Homecoming and Activity Fair Days, and advising student organizations. His passion for connection and deep understanding of the Maverick experience make him a natural fit for our Libraries team.

"I've always been drawn to the work that brings people together," Hillas said. "And now I get to do that in a new setting, with new colleagues, while contributing to the student experience."

A Natural Fit for the Libraries

As Contracts and Events Coordinator, Hillas supports the day-to-day operations of our meeting spaces and venues—including the Parlor, the Atrium and conference and classroom spaces throughout the Libraries. These aren't just rooms—they're hubs of community, learning and collaboration. From student organization meetings and workshops to public lectures and cultural events, John helps ensure each gathering runs smoothly, effectively, and meaningfully.

His role also supports the libraries behind the scenes, coordinating contracts and ensuring our services and vendors are aligned with university policies. Whether it's managing bookings, facilitating payments, or assisting with compliance, John helps keep our operations strong and sustainable.

"This work may not always be visible, but it's vital," he explains. "When the environment functions well, the people in it can focus on their purpose—whether that's research, study or support."

From International Business to Higher Education

Hillas' professional journey didn't start in higher education—he earned his undergraduate degree in International Business/Spanish right here at UTA and even spent time in finance. But something was missing.

"I realized I wanted a career with purpose," he recalls. "In finance, you can make good money, but I didn't feel inspired. Working with students gave me that spark. The impact is real and personal."

He credits his involvement as a student—joining clubs, participating in Greek life and forming strong mentor relationships—as the turning point in his Maverick journey. Those connections helped him find his sense of belonging and ultimately led him to a career in student affairs.

New Role, Same Heart

Hillas' move to UTA Libraries marks an exciting new chapter. While the setting is different, the heart of his work remains the same: empowering people, creating community and supporting success.

"I wasn't actively looking for this role, but the opportunity came along at the perfect time," he says. "It lets me stay close to the community I care about, stay near family and continue to grow professionally."

And the Libraries' culture? It's already making an impression.

"In just a few weeks, I've seen how people-centered this environment is. The emphasis on empowerment, professional development and collaboration—it's refreshing and encouraging. You can feel that people here care about each other and their work."

Beyond the Office

When he's not coordinating contracts or organizing events, Hillas is likely outside exploring nature, planning his next travel adventure or cooking something delicious. A proud foodie (but not a snob, he insists), he finds joy in experimenting with global flavors—often inspired by the people he's met and the places he's been.

"I've been lucky to visit places like Greece, Spain and Japan," he says. "But even when you can't travel, food is a way to connect with cultures and people. And at UTA, we're surrounded by so much global richness— it's incredible."

John grew up in the Houston area, but his roots stretch across the globe. With roots in Mexican American and Greek heritage, he's always been attuned to the ways culture, language, and lived experience shape how we see the world and how we connect with others.

Whether you run into him during an event or see him making it all happen behind the scenes, take a moment to say hello to John Hillas. He's bringing decades of Maverick spirit, a collaborative mindset, and a deep love for community to UTA Libraries—and we're lucky to have him.

Welcome to the Libraries, John!
