UTA Libraries Expands Basement Learning Space to Meet Growing Demand for Collaborative Instruction

To better support innovative teaching and hands-on learning, UTA Libraries is expanding one of its most utilized instructional spaces in the Central Library basement. 

This summer, the Libraries will renovate rooms B03 and B04, combining them into a single, larger classroom designed to accommodate growing enrollment in courses that utilize the Creative Spaces and Services area. Construction is expected to be completed before the start of the fall semester, allowing classes to begin without interruption. 

The project responds to a significant increase in faculty integrating the basement's technology-rich learning spaces into their curriculum, particularly the PC classroom. 

"We've seen such an uptick in course integrations with the basement, particularly in the PC room," said Lauren Stutler, director of Creative Spaces and Services. "Several faculty members hold the majority of their classes in that space because it provides the technology they need and an environment that supports active, engaged learning." 

As those courses have grown in popularity and enrollment, the need for a larger, more flexible instructional space has grown as well. 

The expanded classroom will increase the Libraries' capacity to support larger class sizes while continuing to provide students with access to specialized technology and collaborative learning opportunities that complement classroom instruction. 

"Our goal is always to identify new ways to partner with faculty and enhance the learning experiences available to students," Stutler said. "These spaces allow students to move beyond discussing concepts and instead engage with them directly through hands-on learning and the technology available in the Libraries." 

The renovated classroom will continue to support courses such as Game Studies and Esports, where students work collaboratively using high-performance computers and specialized software. Rather than working independently, students frequently work in small groups, fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and active participation. 

To better support this instructional model, the renovation will include larger workstations, updated furniture, new carpeting, and large wall mounted displays that will enable instructors and students to share presentations, demonstrations, and projects in real time. 

In addition to supporting academic courses, the expanded space will continue to host workshops and campus programming, including instruction in Unreal Engine, the industry-standard software used to develop interactive games and virtual environments. 

Construction will include removing the wall separating the two classrooms, eliminating built-in cabinetry, replacing flooring, repainting the space, and installing new furnishings and instructional technology. The project is being completed in partnership with UTA Facilities Management to reopen the classroom before the fall semester begins. 

Funding for the renovation is provided through remaining Library, Equipment, Repair and Rehabilitation (LERR) grant funds that also supported the original renovation of the Central Library basement. 

For Stutler, the project represents more than an expansion of physical space. It reflects UTA Libraries' ongoing commitment to supporting student success by creating environments that foster collaboration, innovation, and experiential learning. 

"As the needs of our students and faculty continue to evolve, our learning spaces must evolve with them," Stutler said. "This renovation will provide greater flexibility for instruction while ensuring students have access to the resources and technology they need to succeed." 

When students return this fall, they will find a larger, modernized learning environment designed to support collaboration, creativity, and academic excellence across a growing number of disciplines.
