UTA Libraries Hosts Friends of the Libraries Potluck and Author Talk
UTA Libraries is opening its doors for an afternoon of conversation, connection and a celebration of a local author's book about America’s Team.
On Saturday, March 7, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., the Central Library will host the Friends of the Libraries Potluck, an event designed to bring people together in a relaxed, welcoming setting. Guests are encouraged to bring a favorite dish, bring a friend, and enjoy time with others who share an appreciation for libraries, learning and good stories from a special guest, author Dave Lieber.
Hosted by UTA Libraries, the gathering is meant to feel less like a formal program and more like a chance to sit down at the table together, have some lunch and enjoy a conversation.
“This is really about community,” Jennifer Lane, Director of Grants and Assessment at UTA Libraries, said. “We want to spend time with our Friends and welcome new faces that are looking for connection. It's a social group of book lovers who believe in the mission of supporting UTA Libraries."
Sharing Food, Stories and Local History
As guests enjoy the potluck, they’ll hear from Lieber, an award-winning journalist who is well known for his storytelling and investigative work at The Dallas Morning News.
Lieber will discuss his latest book, “Dandy Don Meredith: The First Dallas Cowboy,” which explores the life and legacy of Don Meredith, the Cowboy’s first quarterback and Monday Night Football icon. His work blends history, humor and insight, bringing local stories to life in a way that resonates with longtime fans and newcomers alike.
The author's talk is part of a broader effort to respond to what supporters have been asking for: more opportunities to hear from writers and engage with the ideas that grow out of library research and collections.
What Are the Friends of the Libraries?
The Friends of the Libraries is a community of supporters who value literacy, access to knowledge, and the role libraries play in student success and lifelong learning. Membership is open to anyone; there’s no fee to join, and participation can be as simple as attending events, staying connected, or lending support in ways that are meaningful to them.
The goal of the Friends of Libraries is to create more opportunities for people to gather around a shared purpose.
“We want this to be a space where people can connect,” Lane said. “Libraries are about access to information, but they’re also about belonging. Bringing people together, especially at a time when many are looking for community, is something we’re proud to do.”
The March potluck is the first of what organizers hope will become a regular tradition, with future programs shaped by attendee feedback and interest. Strong participation also helps make the case for hosting even more author events in the future.
The Friends of the Libraries Potluck and Author Talk will take place Saturday, March 7, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the UTA Central Library. Guests are encouraged to bring a favorite dish to share and come ready to enjoy good conversation, meet new people, and spend time with others who care about libraries and the stories they hold.
