UTA Libraries Staff Spotlight: Jeffrey McCulley
In his role as a FabLab Coordinator at UTA Libraries, Jeffrey McCulley helps transform students' ideas into reality. By giving advice, Jeffrey shows students that nothing is impossible to create.
"I like showing people something they thought was extremely difficult is something they can do. It is empowering, and I like to empower others," Jeffrey said. "My background is in counseling, which is all about empowerment and giving people the tools to succeed. This work is kind of an extension of that skillset but in a different context."
Jeffrey stated that his master's degree in counseling from UNT is used daily at the FabLab, where he works with learners and provides mentorship to student workers. Through these projects, Jeffrey helps them develop skills and talents they can use as future professionals.
Before coming to UTA Libraries, Jeffrey worked at The Spark, a hands-on experiential learning space in the University of North Texas' library. He also worked at a makerspace at the Collin College Library.
Jeffrey was drawn to UTA because of the university's investment and commitment to student success.
"When I interviewed here, I was really impressed with the space at the library," Jeffrey said. "I saw a willingness to invest in maker spaces and experiential learning here from the administration, which I thought was very cool."
Jeffrey stated that the FabLab is open to everyone. He encourages people to stop by to visit, share an idea or ask a question.
"If anybody is curious about anything we have in the FabLab, I would be happy to answer questions to help them get set up," he said. "We are open to staff, not just students. I would encourage anyone that has any interest to reach out."
More information about the UTA Libraries FabLab can be found on the Library's website. Staff members can be emailed with questions about the FabLab and its services at fablab@uta.edu.
