About the FabLab

Fabrication Laboratories, or "Fab Labs," began as an outreach project from the Center for Bits and Atoms at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Each lab within this global network ascribes to the Fab Charter in order to allow users to "make (almost) anything."

The UTA FabLab is a creative hub for students, faculty and staff, providing:

  • access to technologies, equipment, training
  • opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration
  • inspirational spaces in support of invention and entrepreneurship

The FabLab is a platform for project-based, hands-on experiential learning opportunities for learners from any discipline or experience level.

Why UTA Libraries?

Libraries have always stood for providing democratized access to information. While books, periodicals, and databases serve as resources for written communication, tools such as those found in the FabLab invite users to absorb knowledge through experimentation, failure, and iteration. By openly locating the FabLab on the first floor of the Central Library, we are removing the institutional barriers between ideas and the tools needed to make them a reality and encouraging learners of all skill levels to engage with cutting-edge technologies they might otherwise not encounter.

As a key element of our strategic plan to be a hub for experiential learning and creativity, the FabLab was the first MIT-affiliated Fab Lab in a university in Texas. UTA graduates with experience in the FabLab can garner a competitive advantage in the workplace by developing their professional, interpersonal, creative, and technological skills.
