Philosophy of Science

Course Number: PHIL 306
Course Description:

A study of philosophical issues raised by reflection on the nature of science and the results of scientific inquiry. The aim of this course is to introduce students to some of the key issues in the philosophical investigation of science. Science is a major feature of our world; one with considerable epistemic and metaphysical status. Our ability to explain these features of science however remains quite limited. In addition to an overview of core issues we will focus our attention on a case study involving the philosophy of experimentation (with both applied and theoretical elements). Our work in this class will focus on:

  1. Developing our skills in philosophical reading, writing and thinking
  2. Deeping our understanding of conceptual issues about the nature of science
  3. Developing an appreciation for the material aspects of scientific practice
