The Mexican War and war in general : considered in two sermons preached at East-Hampton, October 17, 1847

In Sermon I, William Bement warns against strong nations provoking wars with weaker ones. Bement states that nothing Mexico has done, such as the claims issue or insults to our representatives (i.e. John Slidell), justifies a war between the two nations.
In Sermon II, Bement states that it is incumbent upon nations, as it is among individuals, to "love thy neighbor as thyself." Bement maintains that patriotism and the need to obey one
